Robots strike fear in the hearts of fish: Anxious zebrafish help researchers understand how alcohol affects fear

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The latest in a series of experiments testing the ability of robots to influence live animals shows that bio-inspired robots can not only elicit fear in zebrafish, but that this reaction can be modulated by alcohol. These findings may pave the way for new methodologies for understanding anxiety and other emotions, as well as substances that modulate them.

John McCain says surge of enforcement agents is unnecessary to secure border

The surge of 20,000 new enforcement agents that would be deployed as part of the Senate immigration bill that passed earlier this year is unnecessary to secure the border, Arizona Sen. John McCain, one of the lead Republicans on the bipartisan immigration task force that co-authored the bill, said Tuesday.

Speaking at a forum sponsored by the AFL-CIO in Washington, D.C., McCain said he voted for the bill that included the provision of additional agents so that those skeptical about the bill?s effectiveness ?would have comfort? that the border would be secured.

?I?ll give you a little straight talk. We don?t need 20,000 additional border enforcement agents,? McCain said at the union forum, where he joined California Democratic Rep. Xavier Becerra. ?But what we do need is to use the technology that has been developed where we can surveil the border more effectively."

The Senate bill would effectively double the number of border agents and increase funding for enforcement. The bill passed the Senate in June with bipartisan support, and lawmakers are currently debating a version of immigration reform in the Republican-majority House.

At issue in the lower chamber is whether immigration reform should be handled comprehensively, as it was in the Senate, or in a piecemeal approach that separates border security from a plan that offers a pathway to citizenship for immigrants living in the United States illegally. President Barack Obama, Senate Democrats and some Republicans have said they will not support a bill that does not include a pathway to legality.

The debate in the House over immigration reform includes a vocal minority of conservative members who say they will refuse to support any bill that allows unauthorized immigrants to achieve legal status without first returning to their home country.

Last week, House Speaker John Boehner rebuked comments about immigrants from Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King, who caused an uproar when he said that many children of illegal immigrants grow up to be drug smugglers. "For every one who is a valedictorian, there's another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds, and they have calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert,? King said.

McCain also condemned King?s comments at the forum, calling them ?despicable,? and he predicted that the House would pass a bill that includes a pathway to legality.

?I believe that at the end of the day, we?re going to do the right thing. We?re not going to talk about people with cantaloupe calves,? McCain said. ?We?re not going to engage that kind of despicable rhetoric.?

Canadian retail conglomerate Hudson?s Bay Company is snatching up America?s upscale department stores.

The parent company of tony Lord & Taylor has now set plans to acquire Saks Fifth Avenue, including its iconic Fifth Avenue flagship store in Manhattan, for $16.00 per share in an all-cash transaction valued at roughly $2.9 billion, including debt.

The acquisition is expected to close before the end of the year.?Saks Inc. currently operates 41 Saks Fifth Avenue stores and 67 OFF 5TH outlet stores.

What's their beef? Striking fast food workers say low wages

Fast food

JUSTIN LANE / EPA

Protesters gather outside of a Wendy's restaurant as part of a one day strike calling for higher wages for fast food workers in New York City on Monday. The strike, which is taking a place cities across the U.S. aims to increase workers' wages to $15 an hour.

You may find yourself waiting longer for McNuggets or a Whopper this week as thousands of workers in seven cities around the country strike for $15 an hour and the right to unionize.

Building on the momentum of an initial strike last November in New York City, organizers say dozens of restaurants in New York City, Chicago, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Detroit and Flint, Mich., will be affected by waves of worker walkouts over the course of the week.

?These workers need a raise and they need representation in the workplace,? said Martin Rafanan, community director for STL735. The acronym stands for ?St. Louis Can?t Survive on $7.35,? referring to Missouri?s minimum wage. Rafanan said the group, which plans to strike today and tomorrow, hopes to build on a May strike when about 100 workers walked off the job.

?In this particular set of actions this week, we?re expecting to strike 50 stores and between 100 and 200 workers,? he said, adding that the response to the May strike was greater than anticipated. The group only expected 40 or 50 workers to walk out. ?It ended up being a much bigger thing.?

Today?s action could see 500-plus workers at dozens of New York City fast food restaurants abandoning their posts for picket lines, said Jonathan Westin, director of Fast Food Forward and executive director of New York Communities For Change.

At a McDonald's across the street from Yankee Stadium, several dozen people chanted, "We can't survive on $7.25."

In April, 400 fast food employees walked off the job in New York. At twice the size of the group?s inaugural walkout last November, local organizers called that event the biggest fast food strike in the country ? until now.

These actions are designed to call attention to ?the contradictions between the folks at the top? and the workers themselves living in poverty,? Westin said.

Spokespeople from McDonald?s and Yum Brands (parent company of Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut) referred questions to their trade group, the National Restaurant Association. The association did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

?As a corporation, we respect the rights of all workers; however, Burger King Corp. does not make hiring, firing or other employment-related decisions for our franchisees ? Burger King restaurants offer compensation and benefits that are consistent with the QSR industry,? a company spokesperson said in a statement via email. QSR is industry jargon for quick-service restaurant, or fast food.

Wendy?s is ?still assessing the situation,? company spokesman Bob Bertini said via email. ?We have no additional comment.?

This week?s actions come on the heels of a much-lambasted budget guide for McDonald?s workers that recommended they get a second job and budgeted just $20 a month for health insurance, and a report by the National Employment Law Project showing that the vast majority of fast food positions are dead-end jobs. Earlier NELP research found that nearly 60 percent of post-recession job creation was for work that pays an hourly wage of $13.83 or less.

An open letter signed by more than 100 economists and published this month by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst?s Political Economy Research Institute titled, ?Economists in Support of a $10.50 U.S. Minimum Wage,? makes the case that raising wages would add just five cents to the price of a Big Mac.

Although fast food jobs are often thought of as work that provides teenagers with spending money, the average age of today?s fast food worker is 32, the paper said, which has much grimmer implications. ?If a worker today is employed full time for a full 52-week year at a minimum wage job today, she or he is making $15,080. This is 19 percent below the official poverty line for a family of three,? the paper said.

The Associated Press contributed reporting.

The New York Times' Nick Bilton describes 'a day in the life' of his iPhone

Have you ever thought about how often you pick up your iPhone and use it to perform some task or another? That's exactly what Nick Bilton, tech columnist at The New York Times, did for a story published today. Bilton's post follows his iPhone app usage throughout a typical day.

Bilton begins his day with the Walk Up! alarm clock app, then spends the rest of the day grabbing information from a variety of free and paid apps. At the end of the day, he may read a few articles from Instapaper, use the Kindle app to read a book, or use Apple's Remote app to control his Apple TV before going to bed.

It's a fascinating look at one blogger's iPhone app usage throughout a day, and an indication of just how much we've come to depend on our smartphones.

Cyber Security ? A To-Do List for Start-ups | Alltopstartups.com

By Thomas Oppong -

If you don?t use the internet within your start-up company, you?re missing out on a great deal of benefits. For any small business, the internet can be a very cost-effective tool for marketing, social networking, sales and brand awareness. Setting up an online shop is surprisingly easy to do, and the comparative low costs of running it are one of the reasons many start-ups choose to work predominantly from online.

However, no matter how you use the internet in your growing company, you?re going to be susceptible to some security risks. It is of utmost importance that IT security is factored into your business plan, as when companies are affected by hackers and viruses, it can cause serious trouble to the flow of business.

1. Malware protection

Any IT equipment you and your employees will use needs to be adequately protected from malicious software.

Viruses and malware come in a variety of forms and attack your IT equipment in varying levels. Viruses such as worms, Trojan horses, diallers and spyware can not only severely compromise the running of computers, but can in some cases take control of company assets such as emails.

Adware is another malicious program which can severely affect your start-up model, as potential customers find themselves inundated with spam messages from your company. In addition, IT equipment within the office can become inundated with adverts and popups.

Always install a good antivirus program on all IT equipment to ensure the smooth running of internet interactions.

2. Keeping track

Log analysis is essential for keeping track of network security, but doing so can be incredibly time consuming. For many administrators, there?s the prospect of looking over millions of files to check for any suspicious activity.

Making this easy is a relatively new innovation of StormAgent, which is capable of tracking millions of log files and finding unusual logs and record the time and date for each one. This log management from internet security experts RandomStorm, is a great investment not only to save time, but keep tabs on whether your network is being accessed by any outside sources.

With threats spotted in good time, you?ll save yourself a great deal of hassle. Don?t wait until your business computer resources and projects are compromised before you take action, fortunately for you, there are tools and programs that are capable of securing your internal and online? computer assets from danger now.

3. Staying savvy

Viruses are becoming more complex all the time; hackers are constantly finding new ways of breaking into work networks and scam users by email. By staying up to date with the kind of security threats you can expect, and training your staff well regarding security threats, you?ll have much greater success in keeping the internet safe for your company.

Always manage user privileges, and implement internal network security with password protection so no one without permission to view certain files or functions can access them. If? you do encounter a virus, address it immediately to prevent the loss of data or the compromise of your work progress.

Continue to upkeep a good standard of security, and you could see your start-up business really flourish in the online world before you know it.

Eight Coastal Mississippians in NFL camps

All 32 NFL training camps will be open by Sunday, and eight players with Coastal Mississippi ties are looking to earn starting or back-up jobs.

Tops on the list is Pascagoula's Vick Ballard, entering his second year with the Indianapolis Colts. The former Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Mississippi State star led the Colts with 814 rushing yards last season.

Ballard's job security got a boost earlier this week when free-agent signee Ahmad Bradshaw was put on the physically unable to perform list with a foot injury. Also fighting Ballard for the starting position is former first-round pick Donald Brown, who rushed for 417 yards last season.

Vancleave native Chris White, also a former MGCCC and Mississippi State standout, is entering his third season with the Buffalo Bills. It's a crucial camp for White, with the Bills having spent their second-round pick on linebacker Kiko Alonso and also having signed free agent linebackers Manny Lawson, Kourtnei Brown and Keith Pough in the offseason.

White has played mostly on special teams in his career, seeing time in 15 of 16 games in 2012. His rookie season was cut short due to a knee injury suffered while covering a kickoff.

Moss Point's Tom Johnson is heading into his third year with the New Orleans, after spending the last two seasons as a back-up defensive tackle. The former MGCCC and Southern Miss standout has totaled 43 tackles and three sacks since signing with the Saints following two years in the Canadian Football League.

The Saints have changed this year from a 4-3 defensive alignment to a 3-4 under first-year coordinator Rob Ryan. Johnson (6-foot-3, 288 pounds) is a bit undersized for nose tackle, so he could see more time at defensive end or at tackle in pass-rushing situations this year.

Also looking to break into the Saints' defensive line rotation is rookie nose tackle John Jenkins, also a former MGCCC standout. Jenkins, who played the last two years at Georgia, was New Orleans' third-round pick this year.

Jenkins' predecessor at Gulf Coast, Terrence Cody, is back for his fourth year with the Baltimore Ravens. Cody, who went to star at Alabama after leaving MGCCC, was a part-time starter on Baltimore's Super Bowl championship team last year.

Tramaine Brock's San Francisco 49ers faced off with Cody's Ravens in last year's Super Bowl. Brock, a Long Beach native who also played at MGCCC and Belhaven, is a part-time defensive back and special teams standout for the 49ers.

Former MGCCC quarterback Greg Jenkins is looking to make the Oakland Raiders as a wide receiver. Jenkins, a Florida native who played at Alabama State last season, signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in April.

Former St. Stanislaus standout Stephen Peterman is heading into his first season with the New York Jets. The former LSU standout was a starting guard for the Detroit Lions the last six seasons before being released in a salary-cap move in the spring.

Tunisian police fire tear gas to disperse secular protesters

Amine Landoulsi / AP

Tunisian opposition politician Mohammed Brahmi's supporters run in the tear gas during clashes with police after the funerals in Tunis, Saturday July, 27, 2013.

By Tarek Amara, Reuters

Tunisian police fired tear gas in front of parliament on Saturday to disperse secular protesters demanding the dissolution of the assembly and Islamists defending the legitimacy of their rule.

Police began firing after the arrival of thousands of opposition protesters who had been attending the funeral of the assassinated secular politician Mohamed Brahmi, a Reuters reporter said. Protesters threw stones back at police and there were several injuries.

Secular opposition parties are demanding the dissolution of the parliament and the Islamist-led government.

"The people want to topple the regime!" and "With our blood and with our souls we will sacrifice ourselves for the martyr!" people in the crowd shouted.

"Ghannouchi, assassin, criminal," others chanted, referring to Rached Ghannouchi, leader of the ruling Islamist Ennahda party that Brahmi's family says was behind the killing.

Ghannouchi has denounced Thursday's assassination as an attack on democracy.

In a counter-demonstration, hundreds of Islamists flocked in front of the parliament chanting slogans condemning what they called an attempted coup against democracy.

The Interior Ministry issued a statement calling for calm.

The death of secular opposition figure Brahmi, gunned down outside his Tunis home on Thursday, came months after another secular leader, Chokri Belaid, was killed in a similar attack that stoked violent protests.

Brahmi was buried near Belaid's tomb at the Al Jalez cemetery in central Tunis, and mourners carried portraits of both slain politicians. The funeral was attended by Brahmi's widow and son and several prominent politicians.

Brahmi's death further deepened divisions between Islamists and their secular opponents that emerged after President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali was toppled in 2011 in the first of the revolutions that also felled leaders in Egypt, Libya and Yemen.

Witnesses said one man was killed early on Saturday in an anti-government protest in the southern city of Gafsa. Violence also broke out in several other cities.

A bomb in a police car exploded in Tunis but caused no casualties, as authorities keen to maintain stability cast a nervous eye at events in Egypt where violence has spiraled since the Islamist president was ousted by the military.

OPPOSITION WALKOUT

The secular Democratic Alliance Party on Saturday withdrew 10 of its members from the 217-seat Constituent Assembly, taking the number of deputies who had withdrawn from parliament in protest against the killing of Brahmi to 52.

Khamis Kssila of the Nida Touns party said earlier the departing members would begin a sit-in to demand the dissolution of the assembly and formation of a national salvation government - ideas rejected by Prime Minister Ali Larayedh.

The assembly, controlled by Islamists, is in charge of drafting a new constitution for the nation of 11 million people.

Interior Minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou drew a direct link between the latest killing and the assassination of the Popular Front's leader Belaid.

Aiming suspicion at a hardline Islamist, the minister said the same gun had been used in Thursday's killing as in the Belaid attack.

"The same 9mm automatic weapon that killed Belaid also killed Brahmi," he told a news conference, naming the main suspect as Salafist Boubacar Hakim, already being sought on suspicion of smuggling weapons from Libya.

Authorities have identified 14 Salafists suspected of involvement in Belaid's assassination, and most were believed to be members of the local hardline Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia, he said.

Tunisia's political transition since the revolt that toppled Ben Ali has been relatively peaceful, with the moderate Islamist Ennahda party sharing power with smaller secular parties.

But the government has struggled to revive the economy and has come under fire from secularists who accuse it of failing to curb the activities of Salafi Islamists.

Are Earth's Deepest Caves The Last Frontier?

Part 2 of the TED Radio Hour episode To The Edge.

About Bill Stone's TEDTalk

? Why do it? I'll tell you why. It's because it is the real frontier on Earth. It is the last terrestrial frontier for humans.

Bill Stone is a maverick cave explorer who has plumbed Earth's deepest abysses. In this talk, he explains what it's like to descend into the deepest caves in the complete darkness for days on end ? and why he keeps doing it.

About Bill Stone

Engineer and daredevil caver Bill Stone pushes the frontier ? through flooded tunnels, the remotest depths of the Earth and the limits of human endurance. He's currently planning to mine moon ice by 2015 and build an autonomous robot to visit the icebound sea of Jupiter's moon Europa.

His new Shackleton Energy Company intends to raise enough money to mine ice thought to be trapped on the moon's southern pole at Shackleton Crater, and to sell derived products on the moon and in low earth orbit to international consumers.

DARPA outs unmanned drone-launching sub, piracy suddenly less attractive

DNP DARPA

UAVs and UUVs may be unmanned, but they still need a ride to the mission area. Cue the Hydra: an undersea troop-carrier that transports drones. Unlike a submarine, this submersible can operate in shallow waters and charge the batteries of its pilot-free payloads as well as transmit collected data. Even more impressive, it can launch its flight-worthy passengers without surfacing. If this sort of thing turns your crank, head over to John's Hopkins University next month to catch a presentation from DARPA. If your security clearance is high enough, you can even snag a special classified meeting after the regular Joes leave.

House GOP considers food stamp work requirements

WASHINGTON (AP) ? About 47 million Americans received food stamps last year, but only a relative few are required to work or look for a job as a condition of receiving the aid.

Now, House Republicans are considering whether the work requirement should be strengthened as they seek cuts to the $80 billion-a-year program, which has doubled in cost over the last five years.

A small group of GOP lawmakers was expected to meet Wednesday to discuss trimming the program, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. It was unclear whether they would be able to agree on an approach before Congress leaves town for their August recess.

The push to pass a food stamp bill came after House GOP leaders stripped the feeding programs from a farm bill that passed the chamber earlier this month following the defeat of a combined food-farm bill. Conservatives had demanded greater cuts in the food stamp program.

A work requirement was raised during House debate on the combined food-farm bill.

The House approved an amendment by Rep. Steve Southerland, R-Fla., that would have allowed ? but not required ? individual states to test work requirements. But a more far-reaching amendment that would have cut $3 billion a year from the program and required most able-bodied adults to work to receive benefits was rejected. Many moderate Republicans opposed that amendment, proposed by Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan.

Southerland says his work requirement proposal makes sense because it is optional for states and doesn?t cut dollars for the program.

??I think you have to have moral reformation before you have fiscal reformation,?? he says.

The concept of requiring food stamp recipients is not new. The 1996 welfare law laid out work requirements for some able-bodied adults who don?t have dependents. However, the 2009 stimulus law and waivers allowed by the Obama administration have suspended those requirements in most states.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Wednesday that in looking at deeper work requirements, Republicans are ignoring who actually gets food stamps. He said 92 percent of recipients are children, the elderly, disabled or people who are already working.

Vilsack called the Southerland amendment ??arbitrary?? and said it would make more sense to improve state employment and training programs that help SNAP recipients find and keep jobs.

Another proposal favored by some Republicans, including House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, is to turn all of the federal SNAP money over to the states and cap it. Ryan?s budget also proposed a cut of around $13 billion a year to food stamps. But those so-called ??block grants?? to states may be too much of a cut for the more moderate members of the GOP caucus.

Regardless of the approach, any bill passed by the conservative House will be difficult to reconcile with the Senate version of the farm bill, which keeps all of the programs together and makes only a half-percent cut to food stamps. Strong objections in the Democratic-led Senate chamber and in the Obama administration will make it difficult for anything the Republicans propose to become law.

If the two chambers cannot agree, which seems a very possible scenario, Congress may have to extend current farm law ? and current levels of spending for food stamps ? a second time. The law originally expired last September and was extended as part of a larger New Year?s deal on the so-called fiscal cliff.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., have said they will not pass another extension. But it may be the only option for farm programs that would be eliminated otherwise.

In remarks on the House floor last Friday, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., would not say how he expects leaders to proceed on a food stamp bill, except to say they were working on it.

??We intend to proceed deliberately, looking at policies that make sense in reforming these programs in the vein of trying to get to those most vulnerable the relief they need, at the same time paying cognizance to the fact that we have fiscal challenges we must deal with,?? Cantor said.

Couple to speak about Zimmerman's help after crash

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? A husband and wife who were assisted by George Zimmerman after their SUV flipped over on a Florida highway will speak about their encounter with the former neighborhood watch volunteer, who was acquitted of all charges in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin.

Mark and Dana Gerstle plan to speak Wednesday at the Orlando law office of Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara.

Zimmerman and another man helped the couple and their two children out of a flipped SUV off the road near Interstate 4 last week. The family wasn't hurt.

It was the first time Zimmerman was seen publicly since his acquittal earlier this month.

The verdict prompted nationwide protests and Zimmerman's parents and his attorneys have said they fear for his safety.

Pura Vida Energy shares advance as Mazagan farm out nears completion

Energy () shares gained over 16% on the Australian stock exchange as its US$15mln deal with a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Oil & Gas (formerly Plains Exploration & Production) moved closer to completion.

The farm-out has now received principle approval from Fouad Douiri, Minister for Energy of the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco, it revealed.

The company said this is a key step in the approval process and all the other requirements are now administrative in nature.

The final documents - including an amendment to the petroleum agreement with the government ? are due to be signed in August.

In January struck the deal with Plains, which will earn a 52% working interest in the 2.7mln acre Mazagan permit area offshore Morocco.?

The new partner is committed to drilling at least two wells and may fund various other exploration operations, up to US$215mln. It will also spend money on possible sidetracks of either of the two wells and any 3D seismic survey, of up to 2,500 square kilometres.

'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Jon M. Chu to be director-in-residence for AT&T crowdsourcing film festival

By Brent Lang

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - He's waded into crowds of screaming tweens to capture Justin Bieber in action, orchestrated daring mountainside battles between Cobra and G.I. Joe, and showed the world how well Channing Tatum could hoof it with "Step Up."

Now Jon. M. Chu is taking on the world of crowdsourcing.

Fresh off the blockbuster hit "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," Chu has signed a pact to serve as a special director-in-residence and mentor for new mobile phone film festival that is sponsored AT&T, according to an individual with knowledge of the deal tells TheWrap.

Chu will assist the Los Angeles digital marketing agency interTrend Communications on the AT&T Take Your Shot Films project, which spotlights web videos shot with smart phones. Winners of a national sweepstakes will get a chance to roll up their sleeves alongside Chu and will get the opportunity to work with the director in a one-on-one capacity.

Chu will be involved in helping the public craft the finished product, the individual said, and other notable creative talent will be announced at a later date.

InterTrend did a similar crowdsourcing style promotional campaign for AT&T last year, launching a webseries called "Away We Happened." The show drew on South Korean soap operas to tell the story of a couple who begin a cross-country relationship after they accidentally swap suitcases at the airport. Produced in conjunction with Wong Fu Productions, "Away We Happened" attracted 20 million views.

Chu is on a roll. "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" earned more than $370 million worldwide and he has been tapped to direct the third film in the action franchise. Chu also directed the "Step Up" films and the Justin Bieber concert film "Never Say Never." He will oversee Bieber's upcoming 3D concert film of his "Believe" tour.

Based in Long Beach, Calif., interTrend numbers Nestle, Western Union, Anheuser Busch and Universal Studios Hollywood among its clients.

The weather was warm and sunny across most parts of Iceland yesterday and the outlook is good for the next few days after a cool start to the summer.

Record numbers of people stayed at camping grounds in North and East Iceland over the weekend. At ?sbyrgi, where temperatures reached 27?C (80.6?F) and Hallormsta?ur campers had to be turned away due to lack of space.

Einar G?slason at Visit H?sav?k tourist office?told visir.is?that both Icelanders and tourists are following the good weather. ?There are an unusually large number of Icelanders at the camping ground. I spoke to one of them from Selfoss yesterday and he said that he would spend the summer in the North instead of in the rain and wind in the south, which is understandable,? he said.

First ever small animal model of the virus, often called the "stomach flu," provides tool for future drug studies

ANN ARBOR, Mich. An animal model of the human norovirus created at the University of Michigan Health System lays the groundwork for understanding the biology of the pesky virus and developing antiviral drug treatment.

Well-known as the virus that impacts cruise ship vacations, norovirus leads to misery on land too. The virus spreads quickly from person to person in any closed-in space, such as schools, nursing homes, or day-care centers.

"The first virus in this group was discovered in 1972 following a disease outbreak at a school in Norwalk, Ohio in 1968. Since then research has been underway to culture noroviruses in the laboratory and develop animal models," says lead researcher Christiane Wobus, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan Medical School.

An international group of scientists from the U.S. and Germany authored the study published in mBIO, a journal of the American Society of Microbiology.

"Norovirus research has been hampered by the absence of a norovirus cell culture and a genetically manipulable small animal model," Wobus says. "This new model gives us the tool to test potential antiviral compounds and may lay the foundation to culture these viruses in the lab."

The new model was developed by determining whether human noroviruses can infect "humanized" mice, this is mice containing human immune cells. These mice are widely used for study of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a virus which can only infect human cells.

As a control researchers also included the same mice without human immune cells. In the study, both groups of mice were infected by human norovirus.

Additional studies determined that the immunodeficient background of this particular mouse strain is important in permitting human norovirus infection and identified macrophages, a vital immune cell in the body, as the cell type infected by the virus.

Very few particles of the virus can lead to infection. Estimates are as few as 18 particles can cause gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) and lead to diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. In the U.S. norovirus causes approximately 21 million cases of acute gastroenteritis a year, and 800 deaths.

"Most people can cope with the symptoms, but deaths are more likely among the elderly mainly because of dehydration," Wobus says.

Only the common cold is more widespread than the norovirus, which can remain on surfaces for weeks, ready to cause more infections. Because it lacks a lipid envelope, norovirus is not susceptible to common disinfectants and alcohol-based sanitizers.

The economic impact of these infections is staggering with an economic cost for norovirus associated food-borne outbreaks alone of $5.8 billion in the U.S.

There is no vaccine for preventing norovirus infection and no drug to treat it. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers some tips for prevention, including handwashing with soap and water, washing fruits and vegetables properly and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, and if you are sick not preparing food or caring for others.

Moto XMoto X

Solid but mid-range specs found under familiar black casing with a curved back

As we said when the first press renders of the Moto X hit the web, the leaks are just going to keep coming as we get closer and closer to its official reveal on August 1st. This time by way of the folks at AndroidPolice, we have pictures of the Moto X variant for AT&T (aka XT1058 or "ghost") with a whole breakdown of purported specs and benchmarks. On the outside everything looks to be in order along with previous leaks and renders, so the important part is what the diagnostics and FCC filings obtained by the site show of the internals:

  • Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM9860DT processor, clocked at 1.7GHz
  • 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, no SDcard slot
  • 720x1280 4.7-inch display (minus a few pixels for the on-screen buttons)
  • 10.5MP rear and 2.1MP front-facing camera

Cyclist pedalling support for completion of Trans Canada Trail

One year after his wife was killed on a cycling trip, an Alberta man has again taken to the road to carry out her wish to see completion of the Trans Canada Trail.

The Trans Canada Trail was conceived in 1992 as a 25-year plan to build a non-motorized link, using a mix of new and existing trails, right across the country.

With just five years to go, B.C. alone still has 721 kilometres left to do, according to Edmund Aunger, 64, who visited Penticton on Friday to rally support for his cause.

?Some people think it?s a federal government project,? said Aunger, ?but roads and highways and trails are provincial matter, so nothing is going to happen without provincial leadership.?

In most provinces, however, ?including B.C., there?s a real lack of provincial leadership, and they leave it to the municipalities and the regional districts to do something.?

Aunger, a retired University of Alberta political science professor, has planned a five-year series of summer rides across Canada that will end on the same day and spot his wife, Elizabeth Sovis, was killed.

The two discovered cycling later in life and decided to attempt the Prince Edward Island portion of the Trans Canada Trail, because it was the first stretch completed. Neither felt comfortable cycling on roads, so they were also glad to see the P.E.I. route billed as among the safest anywhere.

On July 14, 2012, however, the two had no choice but to venture four kilometres off the trail on a two-lane highway to reach a bed-and-breakfast where they planned to spend the night. Halfway to their destination, Sovis was struck and killed by a drunk driver.

She had intended to spend her retirement, due to begin July 1, 2013, riding the trail and pushing governments to complete the 17,000-kilometre route.

Sovis envisioned the trail as ?someplace you can go where you (can feel) safe and not have to be an Olympic athlete to cycle on it,? Aunger said, adding he?s committed now to making that a reality.

The first leg in his five-year series began in Victoria on July 1 and is expected to end in Edmonton on August 25. He maintains a five-days-on, two-days-off schedule and spent his most recent break in Penticton.

Throughout the ride, he?s planned rallies at which he?ll share his message and encourage people to visit his website to sign an online petition. Doing so will also trigger emails to Premier Christy Clark and two ministers.

Aunger wants Clark to publish an action plan to outline how her government will complete the B.C. portion of the trail by 2017. He also wants to province to give priority to rerouting the trail in areas where it joins highways, like between Penticton and Summerland.

Penticton MLA Dan Ashton noted the South Okanagan has benefitted from recent improvements to the KVR Trail, which forms part of the Trans Canada Trail, and is confident the Liberal government will find a way to get all of the B.C. portion done.

?I know that there are opportunities that will come forward in the future,? Ashton said. ?The Trans Canada Trail is a wonderful entity for the whole country.?
