Tel Aviv University Research Increases Speed and Memory for Mobile Devices

Though smartphones and tablets are hailed as the hardware of the future, their present-day incarnations have some flaws. Most notoriously, low RAM memory limits the number of applications that can be run at one time and quickly consumes battery power. Now, a Tel Aviv University researcher has found a creative solution to these well-known problems.

As silicon technology gets smaller, creating a large and powerful memory grows harder, say PhD candidate Elad Mentovich and his supervisor Dr. Shachar Richter of TAU?s Department of Chemistry and Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Working with carbon molecules called C60, Mentovich has successfully built a sophisticated memory transistor that can both transfer and store energy, eliminating the need for a capacitor.

This molecular memory transistor, which can be as small as one nanometer, stores and disseminates information at high speed ? and it?s ready to be produced at existing high-tech fabrication facilities. Major companies in the memory industry have already expressed interest in the technology, says Mentovich, who was awarded first prize for his work at May?s European conference in the session on Novel Materials Approaches for Microelectronics of the Materials Research Society. The basis of the technology has been published in the journal Advanced Materials and Applied Physics Letters.

Closing the technology gap

Mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are the computing devices of the post-personal-computer (PC) era, says Mentovich. These devices, which are small and battery operated, are quickly closing the gap with their laptop or desktop ancestors in terms of computing power and storage capacity ? but they are lacking in RAM, the run-time memory reserves that computers need to operate various programs. Because current RAM technology is power-hungry and physically large, it doesn't function well in mobile devices. That?s where laptops and PC's retain the edge.

As many as 15 years ago, technology experts realized that the problem with shrinking electronics would be the physical size of the hardware needed to make them run. The idea of a sophisticated transistor, which could do the job of both the transistor and the capacitor, was a technological dream ? until now.

In order to tackle this technology gap, Mentovich was inspired by the work of Israel Prize winner Prof. Avraham Nitzan of TAU?s Department of Chemistry, who proved that, due to its special structure, a molecule can store both an electric charge and information at the same time. To apply this finding to transistors, Mentovich used C60 molecules, made up of 60 carbon atoms, and put them in the channels of a transistor, creating a smaller-than-silicone, high-speed transistor that could also do the job of a capacitor.

Going mobile

Mentovich believes that this technology is sorely needed in today's mobile world. 2012 was the first year in which big technology companies sold more tablets and smartphones than laptops and notebooks combined, he notes. "When this new technology is integrated into future devices, you will have much more memory on your smartphones and tablets, approaching the level of a laptop. With that kind of memory, you?ll be able to run applications simultaneously, and because it is low voltage, power consumption will fall and battery life will be longer."

The next step is to find a fabrication facility with the necessary materials to manufacture the transistors. According to Mentovich, the benefit of this product is that with the right equipment, which is standard in high-tech facilities, and his breakthroughs on how to put the transistors together, these molecular memories could be manufactured anywhere. "The distance to implementation is not far," he says.

Google Street View puts five national parks at click of a mouse

FRESNO, Calif.???Imagine being the only driver on a two-lane asphalt highway as the stark desolation of Death Valley National park passes on each side and the blue sky stretches up from the horizon.

Or picture a tight left turn on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road, where, in the east, iconic Half Dome suddenly appears against a backdrop of the snow-capped High Sierra.

The Google Street View service that has brought us Earth as we might not be able to afford to see it ? as well criticism that some scenes along its 5 million miles of the globe's roadways invade privacy ? this month has turned its 360-degree cameras on road trips through five national parks in California.

"Everyone likes to take a road trip through a national park," said Evan Rapoport, the Street View project manager. "Bringing unique places to people that they might not go in the real world is unique to Street View."

The company sought permission from the Department of the Interior before filming in May as drivers hit the road in vehicles rigged with 15-lens cameras that point in all directions, Rapoport said. The camera fires off still images at intervals depending upon the speed of the vehicle, then custom software blurs faces and stitches all of them together into an ever-advancing 360-degree panorama.

Click right and see orange-hued boulders formed from cooling magma. Click up and squint into that fireball of a sun hovering over the southeast California desert in Joshua Tree National Park, which is featured with the others along with the forest-dense Sequoia & Kings Canyon and Redwood National Park at Crescent City near the Oregon border.

Stop in the middle of the virtual road and do a 360 without worrying about being rear-ended by a ubiquitous RV.

The project was part of a Street View "refresh" of California that involved a trip down Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast, including the Bixby Creek Bridge that spans the mouth of a coast-hugging canyon.

Is it part of a master plan to capture people in a virtual world? "I sure hope not," Raporport said. "Part of our goal is to inspire people to see these places in person."

As national park attendance continues to decline, officials welcome this unique virtual visit as a way to keep fans connected and inspire others to experience the sights in person.

"I often wish we could get the word out on some of the park system's lesser-known wonders," said Candace Tinkler, chief interpreter at Redwoods, with its massive trees that can live 2,000 years and soar up to 350 feet. "This is a wonderful opportunity for people around the world to connect to these places."

The parks join other Street View features like a snowy glide down one of the ski runs at Squaw Valley of 1960 Olympics fame, or a walk around the gardens of the Louvre museum in Paris. Rapoport would not say whether other U.S. national parks are being considered.

Joe Zarki, a park ranger at Joshua Tree, said the virtual drive could be used to show tourists at the 1,200-square-mile park's visitors centers that the flat expanse of desert changes to a landscape of boulders and the namesake towering yuccas within an hour's drive.

"We're often the forgotten big park," said spokeswoman Cheryl Chipman, of the park that is the largest in the lower 48. "I think it will make people want to come to the park. It's a cool place, but it is remote. When they see those photos and the crystal clear blue skies they're going to want to come here."

Methods to Enhance your Company Selection interviews - Land Which

There are lots of factors that may affect the outcome of your small business selection interviews. When you have completed several selection interviews, you probably have nothing to concern yourself with. Inexperienced hiring managers probably will. Down sides are going to be using the college graduates, especially those which have didn't have work just before. What you need to carry out is actually struck the actual sidewalk working, even though you do not know much. In regards to level of experience, spend specific awareness of exactly what your company could be searching for. Probably, they'll inform you upfront what sort of experience they're trying to find. The following 3 strategies will help you with your company selection interviews. Why don't we begin.

When you execute a appointment, as we possess discussed before, body language takes on an important role. Usually tremble palms with individuals when you first fulfill these. A great handshake produces a great first effect! Banging palms is definitely important if the person selecting you is older. It is a social etiquette that's always anticipated. Everyone automatically smoothies palms, particularly when these people visit a palm extended within their approach from your pleasant person. Simply grin as well as tremble palms - that is all you need to do. You should remember to tremble palms prior to watch job interview. It is usually anticipated. You will find significantly unique aspects that are came across together with business because they are on the internet. Nonetheless which is just about all aged hat to people who have been inside the I am game long enough. Therefore just remember the environment may become very different, you'll also find to adjust to it the most effective you are able to. Determine as well as computed threat is what perform inside our business, which is the actual careless risk-taking that individuals desire you to steer clear of.

Sometimes it's hard to do all the correct points or even remember them if you are not totally relaxed. Everyone, such as the interviewer, sees that a business interview could make someone stressed. You need to have a schematic with the kinds of queries that you might come across on the interview by itself. You should not say that you don't be aware of answer, or stroll at all. Wanting to deceive the particular interviewer isn't a good idea. If you don't realize, inform them! If you have not already been chosen, though you have experienced numerous job interviews, you still must maintain your chin up. You're not alone if you're looking for work. 89% Polisse

"Polisse" synopsis is so dull and poor that I am glad I had not read it before watching the movie. The "journalist covering police assigned to a juvenile division that enters an affair with one of her subjects" is only part of a wider and more complex quilt of characters and interesting stories.Ma?wenn brings up the dirty and dark side of Paris with the help of an excellent team of child actors - Malonn L?vana, the lovely little girl of "Tomboy" (where she plays the sister of the leading character) is someone to keep an eye on - and the best known actors of the French cinema of today: Marina Fo?s, Sandrine Kiberlain, Nicolas Duvauchelle, Fr?d?ric Pierrot, Karin Viard, Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Alice de Lencquesaing (L'heure d'?t?, Le p?re de mes enfants), J?r?mie Elka?m (La guerre est d?clar?e), Karole Rocher, and others. This team of stars, however, can be a double-edged sword: at the same time it calls the attention and arouses curiosity, it can also hinder the identification with the characters and/or concentration. It was just me, perhaps, but every time a known face appeared on the screen, my mind would unplug and try to remember in which movie I had seen that actor. Despite the great cast and some memorable moments, "Polisse" is average. It looks like a police tv drama show, both in format and melodrama, but a very good one it?s true. If made for tv, all the crucial subjects raised by Ma?wenn - such as pedophilia, social welfare, immigration, violence - could be better placed and developed, taking in mind the way she chose to portray them. Choices, by the way, seem to be carefully taken. Melissa ?s "ugly panties" being childlike and having the saying "spank me" that she didn?t know what means may work as an alert on how we collaborate with these sexual "fair tale" fantasies. The saying in English (spank me) may also be a criticism on our contemporary times where we usually follow global and standardized models/ideas, sometimes without really knowing or thinking about what they mean, what can be also seen, let?s say, in the episode of the "telephone teenager girl". "But it was a smartphone". Although I don't think "Polisse" is that good, Ma?wenn definitely got my attention. I liked a lot her character Melissa and how it develops and grow as the story unfolds; I was delighted with the funny discussion over the changes in the French language (on how we are killing our language); and the final scene really impressed me - the ending can be melodramatic as said Peter Bradshaw, but definitely not unconvincing. That said, I will sure check Ma?wenn's previous movies and will be waiting for more.

Autopsy: late Falcons star had brain disease

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? Former Atlanta Falcons safety Ray Easterling had a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated concussions when he shot himself this spring, an autopsy report concludes.

The medical examiner's report found that Easterling's brain had signs "consistent with the findings of chronic traumatic encephalopathy," a progressive degenerative disease that can be caused by multiple concussions. Easterling died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in April. He was 62.

The autopsy report was provided Friday to The Associated Press by his widow, Mary Ann Easterling, who is among thousands of plaintiffs who have sued the NFL, claiming the league failed to properly treat players for concussions and attempted to cloak any links between the violent sport and brain injuries. The autopsy's findings were first reported by The New York Times.

"I was expecting it," Easterling said. "It verifies all of our suspicions, Ray's included."

Easterling helped lead the Falcons' stout defense in the 1970s. He played from 1972 to 1979 as a member of the "Gritz Blitz" defense in 1977 that set the NFL record for fewest points allowed in a season.

After his career, however, Easterling suffered from dementia, depression and insomnia, Mary Ann Easterling said.

"I feel affirmed and I feel at peace," she said of the autopsy report. "It made my heart hurt even more to know he suffered through that."

Romney looks to build ties with British leaders

LONDON (AP) ? With the Olympics Games as a backdrop, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is meeting with Britain's most powerful people as he seeks to send a message that he recognizes the close bonds between the U.S. and its top ally ? and to project an image of leadership.

"We have a very special relationship between the United States and Great Britain," Romney told NBC News in an interview in London on the first day of a weeklong overseas trip that will also take him to Israel and Poland. "It goes back to our very beginnings ? cultural and historical."

Romney's first official appearances during a campaign swing intended to highlight longtime U.S. alliances are with British Prime Minister David Cameron and former Prime Minister Tony Blair. The Republican also is slated to meet with Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister, and Ed Miliband, the leader of the opposition Labour Party. Romney, a former private equity executive, also requested a meeting with Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, Britain's top financial official.

Romney, whose decades in private business gave him ample exposure to international affairs, is a former one-term governor untested on the world's political stage. He hopes to convince voters back home that he is no novice on foreign affairs and that they should elect him as president in a complex, dangerous world.

Romney also will spend part of his time in London raising money and highlighting a key part of his resume ? the successful Salt Lake City Olympics he managed ? with an appearance Friday at the opening ceremonies of the London Games.

Meeting with British officials is typically one of the first priorities of any new president, and establishing those relationships beforehand can help smooth any transition. It's not unusual for American presidential candidates to meet with British leaders during the campaign; Obama did so when he took a trip abroad as the likely Democratic nominee in 2008.

This isn't Romney's first meeting with Cameron; the two also talked during a Romney visit to London in 2011. This year, Cameron traveled to the U.S., where he met Obama and attended a state dinner in Washington but did not meet with Romney.

Romney's meeting with a deputy prime minister is somewhat unusual. It's happening because Britain has a coalition government, and Clegg's Liberal Democrats govern alongside Cameron's Conservative Party.

The meetings come a day after the Daily Telegraph newspaper published a story quoting an unidentified Romney campaign adviser saying the Republican believes the U.S. relationship with Britain is special because of shared "Anglo-Saxon heritage" and the White House doesn't appreciate that shared history.

Romney, however, quickly distanced himself from any such view.

"I don't agree with whoever that adviser might be," Romney told NBC News, "but do agree that we have a very common bond between ourselves and Great Britain."

Nonetheless, Vice President Joe Biden and top Obama aides criticized Romney. "The comments reported this morning are a disturbing start to a trip designed to demonstrate Gov. Romney's readiness to represent the United States on the world's stage," Biden said.

Later Thursday, Romney planned to hold a high-dollar fundraiser at the swanky Mandarin Oriental hotel in London's tony Knightsbridge district. One of the hosts of that fundraiser, former Barclays CEO Ian Diamond, withdrew from the event after he resigned in the wake of a rate-rigging scandal wracking British banks.

As the International AIDS Conference returns to the United States for the first time in more than two decades, we find ourselves in the midst of rapid changes in the field. Our expert faculty members, Susan Buchbinder, MD; Joel E. Gallant, MD, MPH; Jean B. Nachega, MD, PhD; and Ian M. Sanne, MBBCH, FCP(SA), have carefully reviewed the scientific programme and identified the most clinically significant presentations across a wide range of topics, including clinical trials of antiretroviral agents, prevention, primary infection, cost-effectiveness of therapy, and health disparities in receiving services. During the week, our Web site rolled out Expert Highlights (audio podcasts by faculty summarizing and commenting on data), Capsule Summaries (expertly synopsized data from specific scientific reports), and a comprehensive PowerPoint slideset summarizing the selected studies. Later, the slideset will be reposted with added analysis from Drs. Gallant and Sanne included as slidenotes and certified for continuing education credit.

By posting Capsule Summaries of key data shortly after their presentation and providing clinicians with downloadable conference highlights slides and audio commentary by world-renowned experts, our goals are to extend the reach of the key conference data and also to put those data in clinical context so that healthcare professionals can answer the enduring question, ?So what should I do for my patients now??

Following the conference, we will also integrate potentially practice-changing data from AIDS 2012 into inPractice, our comprehensive and free point-of-care reference resource, available at inPractice.com. inPractice comprises a comprehensive, continually updated online textbook for each of the 3 current specialties (HIV, viral hepatitis, and hematology/oncology) integrated with multiple other databases including a drug reference resource, full-text practice guidelines, PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, and CCO Conference Coverage and related CME programs. A search on inPractice simultaneously provides results from all 7 databases, maximizing the chance that users will quickly find the information they are seeking.

Exciting strides are being made in the field, and we look forward to sharing the excitement with our members while providing practical insights into the clinical application of the data.

Tough EU stance? It's in Germany's culture

(AP) ? Head to the checkout at an Ikea in Stockholm to pay for your new leather corner sofa and with the swipe of a Visa card it's yours. Don't try that in Berlin ? that'll be ?1,699 ($2,080) up front please.

It's that financial culture ? a deep-seated aversion to debt and an emphasis on responsibility ? that makes Chancellor Angela Merkel's hardline approach to solving the European financial crisis so popular in Germany.

The attitude shows up in all walks of life, from the daily trip to the grocery store to putting a roof over your head.

The economy is so reliant on cash for transactions small and big, a way to ensure you don't spend more than you have, that Germany pushed hard for the ?500 note to replace its popular 1,000 mark bill when it joined the common currency.

It's one of the largest denomination notes being produced anywhere today, worth around $600, and is even known in neighboring France as "the German note." While even discount supermarkets in Germany happily take the ?500, very few shops in France will accept the bill.

Even though Germany is Europe's largest economy and one of its richest per head, it is last in home ownership with just over 40 percent. That compares to some 80 percent in troubled EU nations like Greece, Italy and Spain, and around 70 percent in Britain and the U.S., where owning your own home is part of the "American Dream."

Germans tend to be instinctively averse to taking out a mortgage. And lenders often demand a 20 percent down payment on a house or substantial collateral. So a culture has sprung up of just renting and holding on to cash.

When mortgage debt shot up by more than 20 percent in the 27-nation European Union between 1998 and 2010 ? and more than 35 percent in Britain and 60 percent in Ireland ? Germany was the only EU nation to see it fall, with a drop of 5.4 percent in that time period, according to the European Mortgage Federation.

The German aversion to debt also translates to credit card use ? or non-use. Only 36 percent of Germans over the age of 15 even possesses a card, compared with 62 percent in the U.S., according to World Bank figures. And even when Germans do have a card, the limit is usually tied to a customer's bank balance and the bill is automatically paid off ? in full ? from the customer's account within a month or so.

"If I pay with my Visa, then Visa takes it from my account ? I don't get any real benefits," said Rainer Hoedt, a Berlin high school teacher.

"When we use our credit cards it's basically only when we go to the States and do our travel expenses through it because it's so easy. Here in Germany I don't use it at all."

Around the world Merkel has been derided as intransigent in her approach to the financial crisis, demanding budget cuts and fiscal austerity from allegedly profligate EU members.

But her hardline stand plays well among the people who elected her.

A new poll for Stern magazine shows 64 percent of Germans think the chancellor should stick to her guns, while only 32 percent think she should reconsider her insistence on austerity. The Forsa agency questioned 1,003 adults on July 5 and 6 for the poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

That means measures which some politicians and economists believe offer a way out of the debt crisis are considered unacceptable here.

Take Eurobonds, for example. Such joint debt could help ease the crisis by pooling risk between rich eurozone countries like Germany and their crisis-hit neighbors. No way, say Germans. Eurobonds, they argue, would just encourage profligate countries to blow their budgets even further, not to mention raise German borrowing costs.

Bailouts? Fine, but only if countries agree to strict austerity measures to get their financial houses in order. Print money? Not a chance, Germans say, still haunted by the memory of the hyperinflation of the early 20th century that helped create the conditions for Hitler's rise.

Germany's attitude to credit and debt largely stem from the financial trauma of the years that preceded the Nazi era. In the wake of massive reparation payments after the loss of World War I, the German mark went from its wartime level of about 4-5 per dollar to several trillion to the dollar.

Germany only agreed to eventually give up the mark in favor of the euro because the European Central Bank was designed just like the Bundesbank, Germany's central bank, as an anti-inflation watchdog whose mandate does not include political considerations ? such as stimulating job growth like the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The experience of hyperinflation is one that has been passed from generation to generation, said DZ Bank research economist Michael Stappel.

"My grandmother always talked about how every day prices were going up, how a bread roll that cost 10 pfennings then cost 5 million marks, and that could never be permitted to happen again," he said. "And my grandmother never spent ? she always saved, maybe 80 percent she saved."

Germans today don't save quite that much ? 11 percent on average ? but that's still much higher than less than 6 percent in the U.S. or 6.5 percent in Japan, for example.

And even the approach to saving is conservative, with 40 percent going into bank accounts, 30 percent into life insurance ? and only 6 percent into stocks, Stappel said. Another 3 percent goes into bonds.

So when Merkel holds Greeks and Spaniards to strict standards in return for European Union bailout funds ? to which Germany is the largest contributor ? and regularly shoots down ideas on quick fixes to the euro crisis, it should come as no surprise, Stappel said: "It's a part of the German culture."

Attitudes toward debt are starting to change, albeit slowly.

Credit cards, for example, are often needed for online purchases and are starting to become accepted in more places ? albeit often only with a roll of the eyes. And Ikea is taking them now in two of their nearly 50 German stores, spokeswoman Josefin Thorell said.

But both the stores that do take plastic are near the border with France where there's more demand from customers that they accept credit cards, said Thorell.

"It's to make it easier for the French customers," she said.

Twitter: Data center problems caused outage

(AP) ? Twitter blamed systems failures ? not a crush of traffic around the Olympic games ? for an outage on Thursday that saw people around the world experience problems accessing the micro blogging site for more than an hour.

The San Francisco-based company said the outage was caused by a "noteworthy" double failure in its data centers. When one system fails, a parallel one is meant to take over, but two systems coincidentally stopped working at around the same time, Twitter said.

"I wish I could say that today's outage could be explained by the Olympics or even a cascading bug," Mazen Rawashdeh, VP of engineering, said in a statement apologizing to users. "Instead, it was due to this infrastructural double-whammy."

He apologized for giving its users "zilch" instead of the service, saying the company is "investing aggressively" in its systems to avoid a repeat situation.

Visitors to the site on Thursday were greeted with a half-formed message saying that "Twitter is currently down." The fields where a reason for the outage and a deadline for restoring service were apparently meant to go were filled with computer code.

Sluggishness or outages were reported for more than an hour in countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Some users were able to post updates through their phones or third-party applications.

Tweets about the Olympic torch, which is wending its way through central London, still poured in, albeit far more slowly than earlier in the day.

When the Olympics open in London on Friday there is expected be an even bigger spike in use of the micro-blogging site.

While the site was affected Thursday, many self-proclaimed "Twitter refugees" flooded Facebook with complaints about Twitter. As usual following outages, "WhileTwitterWasDown" was one of the most-talked about topics on Twitter in the United States. Users cracked jokes about their regained productivity as a result of the downtime ? or going outside to get some sunshine.

Twitter said in March that it has more than 140 million active users and that the service sees 340 million Tweets a day.

It was once notorious for its down times, but has since improved its performance. Still, the sheer popularity of the site ? and its heavy use by up-to-the-second journalists ? mean that even modest outages quickly become news. In June, Twitter experienced problems that lasted about two hours. The company blamed a technical glitch.

Social networking sites are expected o receive an unprecedented surge of activity by sports fans during the Olympics. At the recent UEFA European Football Championship final, users fired off more than 15,000 tweets per second, setting a sports-related record for the site.

Social media users were already complaining about an earlier outage that affected Google's chatting services. The Mountain View, California-based company said Thursday morning that the majority of users were seeing error messages and unable to use its Google Talk service. The issues were resolved five hours later.

Huawei unveils the Mediapad 7 Lite, exact specs a mystery

Android Central

What we see here is the latest Android device to emerge from Huawei, the Mediapad 7 Lite. We'd love to be able to run through the full list of specifications, but as yet very little has been revealed about this tablet. From the press shots it appears to be running pretty much stock Ice Cream Sandwich, but otherwise it's a pretty mysterious device thus far.

What we do know about the device is that the 7-inch IPS display will be capable of full HD video playback. Additionally, the Mediapad 7 Lite will be a metal unibody construction, house a rear facing camera, and be capable of 3G cellular voice, SMS and MMS. 7-inch phone anybody? Otherwise, we know nothing of the processor, the RAM, on-board storage.

It looks really well designed, and packing cellular features could potentially make it a bit of a hit. We'll have to sit tight for the time being though, as there is no indication of launch date, price, or which markets will be seeing it.

Scared of spiders? Well, brace yourself...

Spiders live on every continent, except Antarctica, and in many environments, from rain forests and deserts to studio apartments.

As familiar a sight as these eight-legged creatures might be, there is plenty we don't know about them.

Scientists have described about 43,000 species of spiders, and Norman Platnick, the American Museum of Natural History's "spiderman," estimates that just as many remain to be discovered.?

"Because these are only estimates, people disagree," Platnick, the museum's curator emeritus of invertebrate zoology, said of estimates of the unknown species. "I have argued that we are basically halfway through (identifying the world's spiders). Some of my colleagues think I am being way to optimistic and we are closer to only 20 percent through." [ Creepy, Crawly & Incredible: Photos of Spiders ]

To figure out how many species remain to be discovered, scientists often look to museum collections. Because finding and collecting a specimen takes much less work than figuring out what it is, Platnick said, these collections can accumulate unidentified specimens.

The spiders and other arachnids known to science so far are amazingly diverse. A new exhibit opening Saturday at the New York City museum explores this diversity and offers visitors the chance to get up close with live spiders and a few of their close relatives.

These include one of the largest spiders, the goliath bird eater whose prey includes snakes, mice and frogs; the western black widow, one of the few spiders poisonous to people; as well as other arachnids, including the desert hairy scorpion and the skunklike giant vinegaroon, which sprays a vinegarlike chemical from its abdomen when disturbed.

    1. 'Maiden' Inca mummy had lung infection

The so-called Maiden mummy of a 15-year-old Incan girl who was sacrificed 500 years ago is giving up some secrets, revealing the teenager suffered from a bacterial lung infection at the time of her death, scientists report Wednesday.

    2. Scared of spiders? Well, brace yourself...
    3. Weird 'methane seep' found off San Diego coast
    4. Ancient life-size lion statues baffle scientists

Live goblin spiders, which Platnick is currently studying, are not on display. Typically about 0.08 inches (2 millimeters) long, these spiders are easy to miss, and as a result were a particularly poorly known spider family. In 2006, Platnick and collaborators from around the world began a Planetary Biodiversity Inventory focusing on the goblin family, Oonopidae. At the time, fewer than 500 species ? an estimated 20 percent of the family's actual diversity ? had been described. Today, that number is more than 1,000, according to Platnick.

Improvements in microscope and imaging technology have made it much more realistic to study tiny living things, he said. Most tiny spider species live on the ground, so to find them researchers must scoop up soil and leaf litter and sort through it using sifting or funneling devices and by hand. Some have also been found living in tree canopies.

Like their spider relatives, many scorpions remain unknown to science, said Lorenzo Prendini, a museum curator who studies scorpions.

About 2,000 species of scorpions have been described, but "there may be at least double or probably triple the number of species remaining to be discovered," Prendini said. "I say that because whenever we go to an area, let's say in the southwestern United States or South Africa or Australia that are relatively better known for scorpion fauna, and we survey the area thoroughly and using a variety of modern techniques we double or triple the number of species in the area."

Extrapolating out to the rest of the world, he estimates there are between 4,000 and 7,000 scorpion species on the planet.

It's not clear where scorpions fit in the arachnid's family tree, since analyses relying on anatomical or genetic data show scorpions branching off from other arachnids at different points in Arachnida's evolutionary history.

The relationships among scorpions themselves are still being resolved, and have relevance for much broader questions.

"Because scorpions are so old as a lineage, as I mentioned 425 million years old, and because they don't move around much, they are a very good group for understanding how the Earth evolved geologically and climatically over time," he said. ?

The exhibit SpidersAlive! is scheduled to run through Dec. 2 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Tweet this: Study finds limits to new 'Twiplomacy'

GENEVA (AP) ? A new study finds almost two-thirds of world leaders now have a Twitter account, but many don't bother to follow each other.

The "Twiplomacy" study Thursday by PR firm Burson-Marsteller says President Barack Obama is the most-followed world leader, including by 76 of his peers and other governments.

It says his May 9 tweet that "same-sex couples should be able to get married" is the most re-tweeted to date.

Burson-Marsteller's Matthias Luefkens says 16 of the Group of 20 world leaders actively use Twitter for public diplomacy, but their counterparts in China, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Italy have yet to join.

As Ghana mourns president, focus turns to election race

ACCRA (Reuters) - Ghana has seen a smooth transition of power after the sudden death of its president, but as the nation mourns attention is already turning to who will replace him as the ruling party's candidate in a December vote.

Vice-President John Dramani Mahama was sworn in hours after the announcement of the death through sudden illness on Tuesday of 68-year-old President John Atta Mills.

This ensured that the West African oil, gold and cocoa producer, a former British colony once known as the Gold Coast, avoided the kind of messy political transitions that have plagued other states in a coup-prone region.

Ghanaians congratulated themselves on the seamless handover. Mahama, 53, a historian, former minister and communications expert, is expected to bring a steady hand to a fast-growing economy, one of Africa's newest oil producers.

But questions over who will now step into Mills' shoes as the candidate to keep his governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in power in December's elections will inject some uncertainty into the political outlook.

Analysts say this could drive down the Ghanaian currency, which has lost about 17 percent against the dollar this year as the country's oil-fuelled boom sucks in capital and consumer imports and drives up demand for dollars to pay for them.

Traders said the cedi was relatively stable on Wednesday at 1.9550/1.9600 to the dollar.

"Political disruption is likely to be internal and will focus on who is the NDC's presidential nominee," said Azim Datardina, Ghana analyst at Africa Risk Consulting.

Mills, seeking a second term despite having suffered for years from undisclosed health problems, had already won his party's nomination to run against the opposition New Patriotic Party's Nana Akufo-Addo, defeating a divisive challenge from the wife of still influential former president Jerry Rawlings.

"This was certainly the wrong time for him to go considering that we have elections right around the corner," Rawlings told the BBC on Wednesday.

"Quite frankly, had he been advised and done something wiser earlier, I think he could have survived for another six or seven months," he said.

Some analysts expect Nana Konadu, Rawlings' wife whom Mills crushed in the NDC primaries, to claim an automatic nomination.

But Alban Bagbin, Ghana's health minister and a member of the NDC legal team, said the party would hold an extraordinary meeting to pick a new candidate for what is expected to be a tight race for the presidency.

"Most likely is a new nomination contest with a number of high-profile challengers who earlier balked at opposing Mills. A likely candidate is John Mahama," said Africa Risk Consulting's Datardina.

GHANA "LOST A FATHER"

Flags flew at half mast on Wednesday as the nation began a week of national mourning for Mills, who had served as president since winning a 2008 presidential contest that won plaudits for going down to the wire but remaining peaceful.

"I am personally devastated - I've lost a father, I've lost a friend, I've lost a mentor and a senior comrade," Mahama said in his first comments after being sworn in before a somber parliament on Tuesday evening.

"The fine gentleman that he was, President Mills rightly earned the title 'Asomdwehene' (King of Peace). He brought a distinctive insight to Ghanaian politics. He remained humble, honest and modest throughout his years in public service."

That sense of loss was shared by ordinary Ghanaians too.

"I didn't know him personally but he's everybody's father and a peacemaker," said Peter Fiave, a 70-year-old who went to parliament to witness the swearing-in of Mahama.

Tributes poured in from around the globe from heads of state including U.S. President Barack Obama, who had feted Ghana under Mills as a model and "good news story" for Africa.

Rivals were quick to praise the nation's handling of the sudden loss. "We are showing a maturity that must encourage all Ghanaians," said opposition NPP Chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey.

CORRUPTION, EXPECTATIONS

Mahama, fresh from a U.S. tour to promote a recently published personal memoir on Ghana's history, is widely expected to maintain current policies in his caretaker role.

Yet, amid the plaudits for his predecessor, he will inherit the same struggles Mills had faced in managing Ghanaians' high expectations over the flow of crude from the country's Jubilee oil field since 2010, and in tackling corruption scandals that have dogged the NDC administration.

"Given the above, recent momentum has favored the NPP. Ghanaians also have a history of evicting the ruling party at the ballot box in favor of the opposition," Standard Bank said in a research note on Wednesday.

"Much will hinge on the manner in which the NDC is able to swiftly elect a replacement presidential candidate. Infighting already poses a significant threat to party unity, and any signs of an exacerbation of these tensions will favor the opposition," it said.

Former president Rawlings offered a glimpse of the kind of bad blood that exists within the party when he appeared to criticize Mills' achievements in office in the BBC interview.

"Considering that the cancer affected both his eye and his ear, he couldn't sustain more than three hours per day. So it was naturally going to affect his performance," Rawlings said.

Ahead of Mills' death, most analysts had expected a year of election spending testing Ghana's reputation for improved economic management. The government last week sought parliament's permission for extra spending.

"We think heightened uncertainty will result in some foreign investors taking a wait-and-see stance, which would imply a slowdown in FX inflows, which in turn would be negative for the already troubled cedi," Renaissance Capital said.

"We think another 5-10 percent depreciation is likely by (the end of 2012)," it said.

Creative ways to potty train your little one | talking potty chairs for ...

talking potty chairs for girls, cool gear portable potty

?

There are many parents who approach potty training with the same enthusiasm as if they were going to get a root canal. However, you must remember that it is a necessary part of child-rearing that must be done. In fact, it does not have to be drudgery if you make it a bit creative for yourself. If you are already in the process and things are not going as planned, one must be creative as opposed to being frustrated.

Is your potty training the best idea for your child? Pick up ideas as you read on. What about passing comments in front of the child about big kids using the potty whereas the smaller ones using the diaper. The child might get motivated to try using the potty. In fact there are several parents who give their kids rewards too at using the potty. While there are several parents who feel reluctant to give treats since they are supposed to be doing it anyway.

If your child likes cool things then what about getting some cool gear portable potty. This is exactly what I did. Michael my son was so fascinated that he started asking the function for it and made an effort to use it as well. Along with I also started playing with the creating ownership idea. I take him out shopping and let him decide his own big boy underwear and stickers on the potty training chart which I use.

Did you know that ?wet? dolls have been a concept for a while? All the doll does is drinks water and then wets a diaper. However in this case the potty training doll is designed to ?wet? over a potty chair or a toilet. When little girls see these dolls she tries to imitate the concept and thus learns quickly. Did you know that talking potty chairs for girls is also available?

These ways will help in a child get potty trained very quickly and in an interesting manner.

[25 Greatest] R&B Albums of the 2000s (#25-21) | MiddleChild ...

Much in the same way undisputed classics such as Funky Divas,?II, and The?Miseducation of Lauryn Hill helped redefine R&B in the 90s,?the first decade of the 2000s had a slew of R&B albums change the game in a variety of ways. ?It might be debatable how many of these albums are true classics but there?s no denying that R&B would not be the genre it is today without them all having been contributed to the musical canon. Of the 25 Greatest R&B Albums of the 2000s, our first five choices are?

(August 26, 2008)

When you have a famous older sibling in the music industry, any move made into the same arena will inevitably draw nonstop comparisons, Solange Knowles being no exception to the rule. However, while her debut album, Solo Star, was full of standard R&B beats provided by many of the same collaborators shared by her big sister, the lyrics hinted at a depth and untapped potential, which was fulfilled with the release of SoL-AngeL and the Hadley Street Dreams?- a wide-eyed look into the world of a girl evolved into a single mother, ex-wife, and grown woman unafraid to bare her soul and speak her mind. Lyrically, the album cleverly rehashed tried and true tales of love lost and lessons learned; sonically, it proved that R&B could be simultaneously be filtered through pop, rock, alternative, hip-hop, and electronica and still be full of soul; ultimately, it proved that Solange Knowles (last name be damned) was truly an individual and an original.

(September 27, 2005)

Ageism definitely exists in the music industry so once an artist has reached a certain age and their popularity has supposedly ?peaked?, they are usually relegated to being a niche artist still employed only to serve their diehard fan base. Just two years shy of her 40th birthday, however, Toni Braxton bucked that trend. With just a mere 10 tracks, Libra?effortlessly ran the gamut of love, sex (infidelity included), and pain, never sounding too desperate or uncomfortable, and blended with some of the freshest R&B production at the time to prove that Toni was still every bit as talented and relevant as many of her much younger competition coming down the same trail she helped to blaze.

?

(August 31, 2009)

With each successive generation of R&B singers comes a search for the ?second coming? and by 2009, Trey Songz? third album, Ready, primed him to be this generation?s R. Kelly; no trick was left unused in trying to proverbially drop her panties, win her love, lose her love, and/or mend her heart. The lyrics were always apropos to the task at hand, the production perfectly accentuated the current mood, and the vocals, while not always perfect, were smoothly charismatic. While he may not be the creative genius that Kelly is, the album confirmed that of his peers, Songz is the best at playing the multifaceted R&B lover.

(September 28, 2004)

Just like any other genre, R&B goes through phases so it was inevitable that the crunk movement which infiltrated hip-hop at the top of the decade would find a way in. What may not have been expected is its ambassador being a not-even-20 something from ATL whose soft and sweet voice was a stark contrast to the roughneck sounds supporting it; that said, it didn?t take long for Ciara to assume her throne and dominate as The First Lady of Crunk&B. Her debut album,?Goodies,?brought an unmatched high level of energy to R&B tempered with Pop flourishes, Dance sensibilities, and a Hip-Hop swagger. And what Ciara lacked in the vocal department, she made up for in her choreography and showmanship, quickly distancing herself from the new school pack as one becoming well versed in the art of entertainment. Regardless of where she and career have gone since then, it?s safe to say that for a moment in time, Ciara ruled the R&B world.

(February 18, 2003)

When any artist has a career that spans decades, they will inevitably have to find a way of making their signature style and sound new again just for the sake of relevancy. And for someone as prolific as R. Kelly, who spent pretty much all of the 90s perfecting his role as the R&B everyman, this would seem like a difficult challenge. Fortunately, he hit an artistic stride with his second post-millennium release, Chocolate Factory. Chockful of the R&B love, R&B thug, and R&B club songs he helped to patent, Kelly managed to find new and creative metaphors to play with, more ways to embellish and elaborate his storytelling, and literally gave R&B a brand new dance ? a decade or more?s worth of work all condensed into one album; reinvention never sounded so smooth.

?and there?s our first five choices. Feel free to comment and voice your opinion and check back tomorrow to find out what the next five albums are!
