Axl Rose says he 'leans Obama' but won't vote

By Andy Greene, Rolling Stone

Axl Rose made a very rare TV appearance Wednesday night on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." The Guns N' Roses frontman didn't perform, but he did chat about hitchhiking to Los Angeles when he was 19, working at Tower Video during his early days in Los Angeles, his band's upcoming Las Vegas residency and singing with Neil Young at last week's Bridge School Benefit.

Rose also took a few questions from Twitter and revealed that he "leans Democrat and leans Obama," although he has no plans to vote because California is such an overwhelmingly blue state.

Kimmel repeatedly mocked Rose for his tendency to show up hours late for concerts. "You're right on time," he said after Rose first walked in. "It's unbelievable." He later held up a photo of an Oscar Wilde quote that supposedly hangs in Rose's house: "Punctuality is the thief of time."

The main purpose of the interview seemed to be promoting GNR's "Appetite for Democracy" Las Vegas residency, which still has plenty of available tickets. "We'll probably go on at the time we're supposed to," said Rose. "As soon as I find out what that time is -- as soon as it's negotiated." At the end of the interview he told the studio audience they all had tickets to the Vegas show under their seats. He also told the audience that he arranged for a Tommy's Burger truck to give them free food after the taping.

Many fans noticed that Axl's voice was a little rough at the Bridge School Benefit. Rose didn't specifically address that, but he did say he was recovering from a bout with strep throat.

Kimmel largely steered clear of controversial topics, including Rose's decision to skip the band's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony and his strained relationship with his former bandmates.

Weekly US jobless aid applications fall to 369K

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Weekly applications for U.S. unemployment aid fell last week to a seasonally adjusted 369,000, a level consistent with modest hiring.

The Labor Department said Thursday that unemployment benefit applications dropped by 23,000, from a revised 392,000 the previous week. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose to 368,000.

The figures appear to have stabilized after being distorted in the previous two weeks by seasonal adjustment problems.

Applications are a proxy for layoffs. When they fall below 375,000, it suggests hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

Applications have fluctuated between 360,000 and 390,000 since January. At the same time, employers have added an average of nearly 150,000 jobs a month. That's barely enough to lower the unemployment rate, which has declined from 8.3 percent to 7.8 percent this year.

Robert Kavcic, an economist at BMO Capital Markets, said jobless claims have struggled to fall below 360,000 this year.

"That barrier could be a good level to watch for an indication that the U.S. labor market is kicking into a higher gear, but we're just not seeing it yet," Kavcic said in a note to clients.

Employers are hesitant to add more workers as long as growth remains tepid and Europe's financial crisis threatens to push that region into recession. Many also are holding off because they are worried about tax increases and government spending cuts that would kick in next year if Congress doesn't reach a budget deal to avert them.

The weak job market has been a key topic in this year's presidential election, which is down to its final days. Voters will have one final employment report to consider, which comes out four days before Election Day.

The number of people continuing to receive unemployment aid fell to 4.9 million in the week ended Oct. 6, the latest data available. That's about 85,000 fewer than the previous week. Some of those no longer receiving benefits may have gotten jobs, but many have simply used up all the benefits available to them.

There have been some signs that the economy is improving.

The unemployment rate fell in September to 7.8 percent. That's the lowest level since January 2009 ? President Barack Obama's first month in office. The rate fell because a government survey of households found a huge increase in the number of people who had jobs. Still, a jump in part-time employment accounted for most of the gain.

Retail sales grew in September at a healthy clip. And home sales and residential construction have shown steady improvement this year, helped by stable gains in home prices and the lowest mortgage rates in decades.

But the economy is not growing fast enough to generate much hiring. Growth slowed to a tepid annual rate of 1.3 percent in the April-June quarter, down from 2 percent in the previous quarter. Most economists see growth staying at or below 2 percent in the second half of the year. The Commerce Department will issue its first estimate of growth in the July-September quarter on Friday.

HUNTSVILLE, TX (10/25/12) Sam Houston State University is developing a laboratory test to detect the use of bath salts, a new designer drug that was added to the list of illegal substances by the Drug Enforcement Administration in 2011.

Sam Houston State University received a federal grant from the National Institute of Justice to create a test for key components of bath salts in biological samples in crime labs.

Bath salts, also known as synthetic cathinones, were legally sold in convenience stores, head shops and on the Internet until being included on the list of illegal substances through an emergency order by the Drug Enforcement Administration in October 2011. These drugs, that are capable of producing powerful hallucinogenic and adrenergic effects, are routinely seized in drug cases around the Houston metropolitan area and throughout the nation.

"Bath salts are the new breed of designer amphetamines, and they pose a number of challenges for law enforcement agencies from a public safety and public health standpoint," said Sarah Kerrigan, Director of the Forensic Science Program at Sam Houston State University.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, bath salts also have adverse effects including rapid heart rates which may lead to heart attacks and strokes, chest pains, nosebleeds, sweating, nausea, and vomiting. Those who abuse the substance also report agitation, insomnia, irritability, dizziness, depression, paranoia, delusions, suicidal thoughts, seizures, and panic attacks.

According to a 2011 report from the National Drug Intelligence Center, drug users are attracted to bath salts because they can evade most drug tests and, as a result, it may not be detected in impaired driving cases or death investigations.

"Analytical limitations for state and local forensic toxicology laboratories impact criminal and death investigation casework, and these deficiencies can have serious criminal justice consequences," Kerrigan said.

While bath salts are easy to detect in seized samples, such as pills, powders and capsules, once they are ingested, they pose a number of challenges in the toxicology lab. The Department of Forensic Science will develop a procedure to detect at least eight of the most common components found in bath salts in biological evidence. These components include mephedrone, flephedrone, methylone , butylone, ethylone, methedrone, MDPV, and naphyrone.

Many toxicology labs use gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to identify drugs in biological evidence. The new study will target a wide variety of the new designer drugs using one procedure.

Home Based Business Tips: How To Make Money Without Getting ...

There are many appealing aspects of home businesses, but there are also intimidating aspects. One of the most important things is to figure out where to begin. It also takes some planning to understand how to make your business successful. There are many things to consider when starting a work from home business, making the journey somewhat intimidating at its outset. This article is intended to give you some of the answers to get you on the path to running your own home business.

While social media can be a great place to promote your business, your focus should be on marketing, not socializing. It is amazingly easy to get sidelined by social sites, causing you to waste precious minutes that could be better spent on something else. You can socialize on Facebook later.

Don?t leave your schedule up to the vagaries of the day. Set a firm routine. Pencil in the times when you will actually be working in order to avoid getting burned out. There will be times you have to work around the clock, but make sure you don?t do that regularly. Quality time with your loved ones is a great stress-reliever, so put work to the side and enjoy your family time.

Go on business trips. Business trips tend to be partially deductible around tax time. Look for a conference or seminar in your field that is in a location you want to visit. Be sure to actually attend the event. By incorporating business into your vacation, you make the trip tax deductible.

It is important to distinguish between time spent working and off hours, and maintain a bright line between the two. Pick a time of day when after which you?ll no longer accept a business call. Take the time to enjoy yourself with your family and friends.

You should open a separate account for your business. Do not use one account for your personal expenses and your business. Keeping things separate also makes preparing your business taxes a snap. When taxes are less complicated to prepare, errors are less likely.

You should have a different checking account for your home business. You need to be able to easily keep your business expenses and assets away from your personal checking account. You will also find it easier to keep business and personal finances straight when it is time to file taxes. If your business taxes are simple, you are less likely to make silly mistakes.

Study SEO strategy. By utilizing it, your business will be better featured on search engines. SEO is a critical part of getting visitors to click on your site. There is more than one way to optimize and as a consequence, there are differing opinions. Take note of several approaches and use the ones you find to be the most fitting.

Discover what others have to say about your website, as well as your product or service. Perhaps you can solicit opinions from third parties, search online resources or read specific feedback left by customers. You can gain valuable insight into how you can improve your business strategies from both positive and negative comments.

If appropriate, one way to earn profits is through membership fees. Increasing profits through membership subscriptions to your site is a easy profit center.

In order to make your home-business venture profitable, you need ingenuity and ambition. Building a separate structure for your home business might be a good idea ? or even a legally required one, depending on your local codes. This is particularly well-suited for home businesses with a lot of face-to-face sales, as it keeps customers out of your private home. Setting aside a dedicated space for your home office will keep you focused on your work.

Organize your office so that your business contracts and other business files are easily reachable. You should also keep your own contracts, such as with your phone company or Internet provider, in the same place in case YOU have to battle with THEM over service!

Learn the value of patience. Your online business will not make thousands of dollars overnight. To be successful as a home-based business, you must put in the effort and wait for the results. Consistency and dedication are key items that you must have throughout your entire business ownership process.

It important to have a support network in place when you?re running a online business. You can find others to enlarge your own network. While it would be helpful for them to be in a similar industry, anyone who has the determination to run a successful business would be good to connect with.

You need to create a good plan to be successful in a home business. Create a statement of future income for your home business. This report will show how much money you predict you will make with your business. You will need to devise sound estimates of your projected expenses, sales and profits. Your hypotheses will give you some ideas as to what you can expect so that you can better prepare yourself.

Establish an internet presence with your new home business. With a website your customers can browse with ease, whether designed by you or a professional, you will be more successful. Give your customers relevant content that is informative and enlightening, and provide them with a way to contact you and make online purchases. Your first step is to research how to design a website that will work for your business.

As was mentioned earlier in this article, a home based business can be both appealing and intimidating. Hopefully you have gleaned some good information and advice from the tips shared in this article. Put that advice into action, and watch as things begin to work more smoothly for your home business.

Study finds strong link between psoriasis and diabetes | MNN ...

You've probably heard about the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes: obesity, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, etc. ?But you probably haven't heard about the link between a certain skin condition and the blood sugar disorder. ?

?

New research has brought forth some rather compelling evidence linking the skin condition psoriasis with Type 2 diabetes. According to the study, which was published in the Archives of Dermatology, patients with psoriasis had an almost four-fold higher risk of developing diabetes than those without the condition.

?

For the study, researchers from the University of California, Davis, analyzed the results of 27 past observational studies and found that people with psoriasis were 59 percent more likely to have diabetes than "control" participants. The studies included patients in the United States, Europe and the Middle East.

?

In particular, those with severe psoriasis were almost twice as likely to have the blood sugar disorder.

?

"Psoriasis is associated with an increased prevalence and incidence of diabetes," the researchers noted. "The association of psoriasis with diabetes may be strongest among patients with severe psoriasis."

During Debates, The Only Good Businesses Are Small Businesses

Post image for During Debates, The Only Good Businesses Are Small Businesses

During last night?s debate, President Obama and Governor Romney referred to small business 23 times. (Obama did it eight times; Romney did it fifteen times.)

But where was the love for big business? In both presidential debates, big business has been the big elephant in the room.?Last night, while responding to a question about George W. Bush, Romney said:

Our party has been focused on big business too long. I came through small business.?I understand how hard it is to start a small business. That?s why everything I?ll do is designed to help small businesses grow and add jobs.

It?s not hard to understand why both Obama and Romney want to stick to talking about small business. Everyone likes small businesses?they?re?uncontroversially?good. The streets of small-town America are lined with small stores and restaurants well-loved by their local communities.

But are small businesses really the key to exponential job growth? Bill Aulet and Fiona Murray of MIT don?t think so.?In an op-ed in today?s Boston Globe, Aulet and Murray draw an important distinction between two different routes to new job creation:

There are small- and medium-sized companies created to offer traditional goods and services to a local or regional market. Think ?mom and pop? operations. They include your yoga studio and the pizza place down the street. While valuable to the economy in general, these companies are not large enough to serve as a growth engine for the entire economy. They do, however, offer important opportunities for employment and provide valuable services.

The other route to job creation comes from exploiting new technological advances to create businesses that aim to compete in a global market. Think of a large pharmaceutical company or biotech firm.

Both small companies and innovation-driven enterprises create jobs, but the types and numbers of jobs they create are remarkably different.

Which route to job creation promises more and better jobs for Americans? Aulet and Murray think it?s pretty clear:

Innovation-driven companies generate many more new jobs and exports than small business.

Aulet and Murray aren?t the only ones to make this point. And yet it seems unlikely that President Obama and Governor Romney will stop beating the small business drum anytime soon. It?s a go-to, feel-good talking point for both parties in these debates.

That?s kind of a shame?because small businesses are wonderful for the country, but even better are those that grow into big businesses. Those are the companies that are opening new markets for consumers and job-seekers. It would be nice if Obama and Romney stopped pretending otherwise.

Home ? business ? Empire Tower in Sathorn a showcase of 'trade-retail synergy'

PATCHAREE LUENGUTHAI
THE NATION October 17, 2012 1:00 am

"It's the global trend for mixed-use building development to meet the tenants' demand," Wallapa Traisorat, senior executive vice president of TCC Land Group, said yesterday. "With our mission, we will create a new synergy, combining business and retail space as one. As a result, the Empire Tower will represent Bangkok's most buzzing business epicentre."

A new landmark will appear on Sathorn Road when the property is transformed. A nine-storey building will go up in front of the Empire Tower main office building as a lifestyle centre.

The new building will feature a hybrid of modern and contemporary architecture to facilitate convenient connectivity, business exclusivity, new lifestyles and green landscaping.

The 58-storey Empire Tower, the largest office building in the country, will be renovated to harmonise with the retail centre. The construction and renovation process was commenced early this month and is scheduled for completion in early 2014.

As it is located at the intersection of Sathorn and Narathiwat-Ratchanakarin roads, customers will enjoy easy access, connecting directly from the tower's second level to the Chong Nonsi Skytrain and Sathorn MRT stations.

On ground level, there will be an outdoor walkway canopy at the entrance with sunken court access.

The project will provide a wider and separated drop-off area and concierge, similar to a world-class hotel.

From the conservatorium main lobby, there will be a smooth connection between the business tower and retail space, with access to higher levels through double-storey escalators and a turnstile security system.

With more than 8,500 square metres of space, the retail building will feature a neo-classic, elegant executive lounge. The main intelligence room will accommodate 200 people and there will be six small meeting rooms.

Tenants and customers can select from a wide range of famous restaurants and bakeries, as well as |world-class gym facilities.

Virgin Active will open its flagship health club in the Empire Tower, boasting some of the most advanced equipment, innovative group exercise classes and outstanding facilities in a spacious, premium setting.

In almost four storeys of the retail building covering 4,000sqm, the highlighted facilities of the club will include a 25-metre indoor swimming pool, hydrotherapy room, mountain-climbing area and capsule sleep section.

Besides the synergy of business and retail space, the complex will offer business network synergy for corporate tenants. Privilege Club members will offer benefits to their clients including company procurement. The members can also network through the Empire Leaders Club.

A group of people nearby moved into position to line up with the door, all likely thinking the same thing: How do I get a seat? ?Left,? I said. ?These people are going to go right.? He looked at me for a minute and then nodded. We followed the initial surge in and turned to the left where the smaller seating section of the train is located?sure enough, the bulk of the crowd flowed to the right.

?Nicely done,? he said as we settled into our seats. If only it were that easy?these calls aren?t guaranteed: they?re dependent on time of day, direction of commute, the type of commuter rail car, the length of the station platform, whether there are special events (that cause more people to take the trains), and of course, people themselves. Guesses about crowd behavior aren?t certain?particularly when it comes crowds on the New York City transportation systems?but patterns do emerge with regard to how we move in public spaces. In the case above, the majority of people may have chosen to look for seats on the right because there are more seats in that area (there may also be a preference for ?right,? but let?s save that for another day). These patterns are the result of both social ?rules? as well as contextual rules, which are formed by the design of the spaces themselves.

New York City?s Grand Central Terminal can easily overwhelm the unprepared visitor. It is an architectural giant?a famed remnant of the Beaux-Arts era of the City that imposes its sense of elegance and struggles to remain timeless even as the City morphs around it. Visitors to Grand Central Station would not be faulted for thinking that the throngs of bodies (up to 750,000 per day) moving through the cavernous space are focused on little but meeting their trains or getting to their appointments. The hustle and bustle that characterizes this space is more than a chaotic scramble to get somewhere, however: Grand Central Station represents an early exercise in New York City?s history to contain and tame the Crowd.

People may joke about the unruly state of traffic in New York City today?with the primary charges often leveled against the bright yellow City cabs that have a reputation for recklessness?but things are far better than they were in the late 19th-century. The maturation of the American railroad in this period created challenges in defining spatial boundaries and maintaining their corresponding social codes. Above-ground rails interrupted the relatively subdued pace of foot-traffic (which, truly, was not so subdued) and forced pedestrians to demand a reconciliation between mechanization and aesthetics. Political support for the latter?couched in terms of safety, modernization, and degrees of preservation?would eventually drive the rails underground, but that still left the site of the depot to be dealt with.

Grand Central Depot c. 1880 | Public domain.

Train depots were meant to manage meetings between pedestrians and machinery, but they were rudimentary in their earliest forms and possessed little means of inspiring a sense of security. In its prior incarnation as a depot, Grand Central was essentially a train yard that marked a meeting point for three rail lines: the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, the New York and Harlem Railroad, and the New York and New Haven Railroad. The New York Times reported that any visitor to the Grand Central Depot ?has considerable terrors, for which ever way the eye turns, a brazen Moloch comes snorting and puffing, ready to crush out the life and hurl away the mangled body of the unwary or the frightened? (1).

Grand Central Depot was meant to physically serve as a transition point for the Crowd, marking a clear departure from the outside and suggesting a shift in behavior was warranted. But walls were not enough to encourage and establish these behaviors:

?One among numerous witnesses attesting to the inconveniences and outrages suffered at the Grand Central Depot stated that the passengers ?are passed in like hogs. Just before the train starts?sometimes only ten minutes, the doors are opened and there is a scramble pell mell. Hats are knocked off, people kicked in the shins, trampled on the toes and pushed this way and that. I have seen women treated shamefully in that way. I have known them to be left-behind for two trains after they have been waiting a whole hour, but could not get through the gate? (1).

The problem it seemed was that the interior of the depot did nothing to manage the Crowd?which could resume the same patterns of movement as they did on the street?and believe me, it was just as unruly out there. In the depot, where passengers were confronted with the unbridled power of locomotives, it was necessary to impose some sort of structure to the meeting: the Crowd had to be domesticated.

Between 1899 and 1900, changes were made to Grand Central Depot that were meant to control the flow (and behavior) of the Crowd:

    1. Circulation and ticketing was centralized rather than being left to each individual rail company which created a definite processual experience.
    1. A wider passenger concourse was installed, and gates were used to separate the concourse from the tracks creating a concrete transitional space between the street and the trains.
    1. Immigrants were separated from other passengers which broke the homogeny of the Crowd and reinforced codes of conduct relating to class distinctions.

Grand Central Terminal waiting room, c. 1904. | Public domain.

Each of these changes was meant to remind the people that they were indeed individuals despite their place in the Crowd, and as individuals they still had social roles and responsibilities to fulfill. Moreover, these changes synchronized the Crowd by putting people through the same paces at the same points. But perhaps the most significant change would come from the architectural firm Warren and Wetmore. A deadly collision in 1902 preceded public demand for an even safer, more accessible terminal. Warren and Wetmore won the bid for reconstruction, and the plan they produced included galleries, which added yet another transition area but, more importantly, rendered the Crowd into a spectacle.

This design, which is the one visitors experience today, preserves the Crowd in a central area, providing raised balconies from which there are plenty of opportunities to people-watch. Being placed on display is not lost on the subconscious of the Crowd: what appears to be hustle and bustle are manifestations of many synchronizations happening at once. So what appears to be chaos to the casual observer is actually a play directed by design that makes the Crowd a key feature of the space even as it is minimized by the architectural elements that Grand Central Terminal is known for: the grand ceiling, the large windows, and the deep main concourse. These items add perspective to the Crowd and diminish its psychological power as an uncontrollable mass.

Now, as a commuter I can attest to a resurgence in unruly Crowd dynamics beyond the station terminal?once you?re on the subway or actually in an LIRR car, all bets seem to be off. And I know that several of my friends who travel in-and-out of the Port Authority Bus Terminal can likely report similar experiences once they?re actually on the bus. How can we explain this shift from relative order? Is it that the Crowd is homogenous again, removed from the processes that transitioned its members into this new setting? Does the Crowd then need to be exposed constantly to the pressures of containment? Perhaps, but it is also likely that each context has its own ?rules? that govern Crowd behavior?it?s just that in some cases, those rules are more readily enforced by external social and physical factors than in others.

Hilary Mantel wins 2nd Booker Prize for Tudor saga

LONDON (AP) ? British writer Hilary Mantel won the prestigious Booker literary prize for a second time Tuesday with her blood-soaked Tudor saga "Bring Up the Bodies," which the head of the judging panel said had "rewritten the book" on historical fiction.

Mantel, who took the 50,000 pound ($82,000) award in 2009 for "Wolf Hall," is the first British author, and the first woman, to achieve a Booker double.

"You wait 20 years for a Booker Prize, and two come along at once," Mantel said as she accepted the award at London's medieval Guildhall. "I regard this as an act of faith and a vote of confidence."

Mantel, who quipped in 2009 that she planned to spend her prize money on sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll, said "I'm afraid the answer will be much duller this year."

"Rehab," she joked, before adding: "My pension, probably."

"Bring Up the Bodies" is the first sequel to win the prize. It and "Wolf Hall" are parts of a planned trilogy about Thomas Cromwell, the powerful and ambiguous chief minister to King Henry VIII.

Alternately thoughtful and thuggish, trying to keep his head in a treacherous world, Mantel's Cromwell has drawn comparisons to the Mafia don at the center of the "Godfather" saga, and Mantel's novel combines finely wrought prose with thriller touches.

"You can see as much Don Corleone in this book as D.H. Lawrence," said Times Literary Supplement editor Peter Stothard, who chaired the Booker judging panel.

"This is a bloody story," he said. "But Hilary Mantel is a writer who thinks through the blood. She uses her art, her power of prose, to create moral ambiguity."

"Bring Up the Bodies" traces the intertwined fates of Cromwell and the monarch's second wife, Anne Boleyn, who fell from favor when she failed to produce a male heir.

Stothard said the new book "utterly surpassed" the earlier novel, breathing new life into a well-known story. Henry VIII's reign has inspired many fictional treatments, from the acclaimed play and film "A Man for All Seasons" to the soapy TV series "The Tudors."

Stothard said "Bring Up the Bodies" showed "the greatest modern English prose writer reviving possibly one of the best-known pieces of English history."

"This is all well-trodden territory with an inevitable outcome, and yet she is able to bring it to life as though for the first time," he said.

"She has rewritten the book on writing historical fiction."

The judging panel, which included "Downton Abbey" actor Dan Stevens, met for just over two hours Tuesday to pick its winner.

The Booker, established in 1969, usually brings a huge sales and publicity boost for the winner.

Before she won three years ago, Mantel was a critically praised but commercially lukewarm author of novels about everything from the French Revolution ("A Place of Greater Safety") to the life of a psychic medium ("Beyond Black"). Now, the 60-year-old author is a best-selling literary sensation.

"My publishers were always announcing my breakthrough book and it never really happened," she said of her early career. "My fortunes began to turn when I met Thomas Cromwell."

Mantel joins Peter Carey of Australia and J.M. Coetzee of South Africa as a two-time winner of the prize, which is open to writers from Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth of former British colonies.

Mantel beat five other shortlisted books to take the prize. She had been the bookies' favorite, although Britain's Will Self was also considered a strong contender for the century-spanning stream of consciousness "Umbrella."

Indian poet Jeet Thayil was nominated for his first novel, "Narcopolis," set among heroin addicts in 1970s and 80s Mumbai, and Britain's Alison Moore for "The Lighthouse," about a middle-aged man's life-changing ferry trip to Germany.

The other finalists were Malaysia's Tan Twan Eng for "The Garden of Evening Mists," which centers on a survivor of a World War II Japanese prison camp; and South Africa-born Briton Deborah Levy for "Swimming Home," a portrait of the devastation wreaked by depression.

The prize - officially known as the Man Booker Prize after its sponsor, financial services firm Man Group PLC - always sparks a flurry of betting, and a blaze of literary debate.

Last year's jury, which gave the prize to Julian Barnes for "The Sense of an Ending," was accused of dumbing down after the chair of the panel said finalists had been chosen for "readability."

This year's list was more adventurous. Only Mantel had been a finalist before, and Self is a relentlessly modernist experimenter, while Tan, Levy and Moore are all published by small independent publishers.

Mantel's book was the best-seller on the shortlist, and will now sell in even bigger numbers.

"Wolf Hall" and "Bring Up the Bodies" also are being adapted for television by the BBC, and a stage version is in the works. But Mantel said she was trying not to feel the pressure as she works on the final book in the trilogy, provisionally titled "The Mirror and the Light."

"It is not the Olympics," she said. "It is not a competition. You are only as good as your last paragraph - and I haven't even written one of those today.

"When I start writing again, I'll forget all this, because every day has got its new problems and every day you feel like a beginner. ... It's just you struggling with your subject matter and a blank screen."

Samsung Galaxy Nexus gets gesture area care of Open webOS

Android Central

Last week the Samsung Galaxy Nexus became some kind of Frankensteinian abomination when the recently open-sourced webOS was shoehorned inside. Already the beast is looking a little better now that the developers have managed to mock up a gesture area at the bottom of the screen. As you can tell in the video, things are still very much a work in progress.

Of course, since the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have any capacitive buttons, the software had to create a row of pixels along the bottom to detect gestures. Presumably, that same row will be usable for the old forward and back gestures eventually, but one thing at a time.

Google Chrome has already borrowed the idea of virtualized border gestures for switching tabs, while others, like RIM, went hog-wild with gesture areas in the PlayBook. While we're busy giving webOS some credit, Touch to Share between the TouchPad and Pre 3 was a solid precursor to Android Beam. Do we have any webOS expatriates in the house? Are there any particular features of webOS that you'd still like to see emulated in Android, or has Palm's operating system already made any mark on the world that it was fated to make? Anyone with a Galaxy Nexus interested in seeing what it's like to use webOS once the software is in a more usable state?

Grits and Grace: 31 Days Embracing Motherhood: When You're Not ...

Everyday I make a thousand tiny decisions. ?Some are big and affect more than just the faces around my dinner table at night. Most aren't.

Most of my decisions like what to have for dinner, which coupon deals to grab, how to style Amelia's hair are simple choices I make everyday and can usually do without a lot of advice.

But sometimes...sometimes I need to know I'm not the only one struggling with how to decide what's best for ?my family. ?I need to know I'm not alone in my quest to have my kids eat more vegetables, my baby sleep through the night, my jeans to fit again.

One of my great blessings of motherhood is my mommy friends. ?Lately, friendships aren't defined by the years we've known each other, the schools we may or may not have attended together, the church where we fellowship. ?Instead, I find my best and closest friends right now have toddlers who are delighted to be tinkling on the potty, first graders who sometimes venture past "green is good", or babies who prefer their milk straight from the source and 98.6 degrees, thank you very much.

We're friends because we empathize, we totally 100% get why there is Pop-Tart on your shoulder and spit up on your shoes, and we DVR shows on girls' nights so we can wait until everyone has put the kids to bed before getting together. ?We're friends because we'll share a homemade casserole or a really good bottle of wine when someone's having a bad day and sometimes even when they're not.

We're friends because motherhood brought us to each other.

And as I get older and farther from the person I was in high school or college, I find myself coming back full circle to those friends who mattered so much then. Now my facebook message account fills with group messages from girls I shared dorms and cafeterias with, girls whose closets I've ransacked, girls who knew me when I was going to change the world in an inner-city school.

Girls who now have two year olds and pregnant bellies and questions about vaccines and breastfeeding and carseats. ?So now we're more than roommates and alumni, we're mothers together.

It's a blessing to share the journey.

Friend, I hope you have someone to share your motherhood trials and tribulations with, but if you don't, I hope you'll visit here often and drop me a line or two about how I can support you. ?

For all my 31 Days posts venture over here.

UK nitrogen cocktail drinker has stomach removed

LONDON (Reuters) - British surgeons removed a teenager's stomach to save her life after she drank a cocktail made with liquid nitrogen during a night out with friends, police said.

The 18-year-old woman, named by newspapers as Gaby Scanlon, complained of breathlessness and gastric pain before being rushed to a hospital in the northern English city of Lancaster on Thursday where she was diagnosed with a perforated stomach.

Scanlon is currently in serious but stable condition, local police said in a statement over the weekend.

"Medical opinion is that this would have proved fatal had the operation not been carried out urgently," police said.

When exposed to air, liquid nitrogen creates a dense fog and is used by bartenders and chefs to add an element of visual drama to dishes or to freeze things quickly, such as ice cream.

It is also used for removing warts and has industrial uses. Contact with flesh can cause cryogenic burn or "frostbite".

Professor of food physics at Leeds University Malcolm Povey said liquid nitrogen should not be consumed while still liquid, as it turns into a gas inside the body and causes the stomach to swell and burst.

"The liquid nitrogen would rapidly change into gas and blow the stomach up like a balloon...the idea that people put this stuff in drinks is just unbelievable," Povey told Reuters.

The bar which served the drink has stopped selling all liquid nitrogen drinks, said police, who are investigating the incident.

Osama bin Laden Bit My Dog | The Jet Set Pets

Osama bin Laden Bit My Dog book coverWhen Osama bin Laden orchestrated the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001 , I was six days shy of losing my slowly-dying mother in Los Angeles, two months shy of becoming a pet parent to Lucy,?four years shy of moving to Manhattan but only one week removed from American Airlines Flight 77, which hijackers flew into the Pentagon that fateful late summer day.

From nearly 3,000 miles away, I mourned the losses of the thousands killed in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, in the air and on the ground. I thought about being on American Airlines Flight 77 exactly a week before and wondered if the same crew that worked my flight was on board on 9/11. Did the hijackers really do a trial run on board my flight as I read? I cried hard for?Cantor Fitzgerald?CEO Howard Lutnick, whose life was spared because he took his son to his first day of kindergarten but whose firm lost 658 employees, including Lutnick?s brother and best friend. What I didn?t do was think about the dogs and other animals affected by 9/11. Not until I read Osama bin Laden Bit My Dog (He?s Sorry Now But I?m Still Drinkin? About It), a touching ?memoir by Steve Dougherty?that recently became available electronically.?The former People writer?vividly takes readers back to 9/11 and the days that follow as he tries to reach his?mixed breed pooch, Audrey Golightly Dougherty, a rescue from the North Shore Animal League, a Long Island-based no-kill pet shelter.

Dougherty was in his Battery Park City apartment across from the World Trade Center when the first plane hit the North Tower but outside to witness the second plane exploding into the South Tower. He delivers a powerful narration of not realizing what happened to the realization of the attacks to the uncertainty that followed. Deftly shaping Osama bin Laden Bit My Dog around reaching Audrey and his daughter Eva, who was at her middle school two blocks north of the WTC at the time of the attacks, Dougherty moves at a?fast pace and puts readers at the scene of the murders. It?s not all pretty but it is mesmerizing as Dougherty races to Eva?s school ? but without his four-legged companion, who is left alone at home. I quickly swiped my iPad screen, wondering the fate of Audrey Golightly (Eva is responsible for the pooch?s Breakfast at Tiffany?s-like name and the pup?s adorable photo on the book cover).

Will the window Dougherty left open blow enough ashes and soot inside the apartment to choke Audrey?

Is Audrey?s water safe?

Does she have food or does it even matter because it?s probably full of carcinogens?

Will someone rescue her before it?s too late?

Though Dougherty is trying desperately to reach Audrey, if he stopped drinking, could he think more clearly and come up with a rescue plan?

I?ll never know what it was like to be in Manhattan that day, the steps I would have taken to reach my dog or how I would have handled witnessing what Dougherty did. But while reading Osama bin Laden Bit My Dog?I was in the middle of the chaos, confusion and carnage. As I neared the end of the e-book, I looked down at my longhair Chihuahua Lucy, whose chin rested comfortably on her bed. She stared up at me with her large, adorable eyes and gave me a pleading look that said, ?You would do anything for me.? And she?s right.

(In full disclosure, Dougherty was a co-worker at People. I haven?t been in contact with him in well over a decade and had no idea about his personal 9/11 experience until I read Osama bin Laden Bit My Dog. I hope he gets a handle on his drinking.?Even if I didn?t know Dougherty, I?d still give his memoir a paws up.)

hCG Diet Drops | HCG 4 Me

By admin

Introduction hCG Diet Drops and Dieting

According to the various media reports that have emerged over the past years, countries across the world are beginning to suffer obesity epidemics in which large portions of the population are struggling to maintain healthy weights. As a result, the popularity of dieting is hardly a surprise as it is one of the most popular ways to lose weight (although there are many others). Dieting involves an individual changing their diet to either increase or decrease their weight, often the later is more popular. There are many different diets available for people to practice, ranging from those that call for very slight changes to those that demand extreme alterations to eating habits be made.

hCG Diet Drops

In terms of diet severity, the hCG diet definitely rests near the extreme end of the scale. hCG is a hormone that is produced in the placenta of pregnant women but the actual hCG that is available in hCG diet drops is not extracted from women; it is instead a variation on this hormone created in a laboratory. hCG drops have been chosen as a dieting aid because of their ability to influence a person?s metabolism once ingested.

How do hCG Diet Drops Work?

Those undergoing the hCG diet in an attempt to lose unwanted weight will have to ingest this hormone frequently as part of the diet. Once ingested the hormone begins to alter the individual?s metabolism, making the body?s fat stores readily available as a source of energy. Those on the diet are advised to consume no more than 500 calories a day to ensure the diet works correctly. Because the body now has access to the abundance of energy in fat stores, there will be little need for external sources of energy to be provided from food and drink.

This incredibly low intake and incredibly high expenditure of calories is a recipe for dramatic weight loss. Various supporters of the diet claim to have experienced weight loss of up to 2 pounds every single day.

Legality of the hCG Diet Drops

You are not alone in thinking that this dramatic loss of weight may not be a very healthy way to lower one?s weight. At the instance of writing, hCG is not legally available in the United Kingdom without a prescription from a doctor; neither is it available in the United States. Various websites claim to be able to supply their customers in the UK with hCG diet drops, but this is both illegal and operating without legislation (there is no telling what, if anything, could be in the various hCG supplements). Customers should exercise extreme caution before considering purchasing hCG diet drops on the internet.

Medical and Scientific Reaction to hCG Diet Drops

But don?t take the word of this article for it, the reaction to the hCG diet from both the scientific and medical community has been scathing. Dr David Katz, who is director of the Yale University Prevention Research Centre said of the hCG diet: ?This diet is appalling. It takes irresponsible diets to new heights. A 500-calorie-a-day diet is just plain dangerous?. But there is not just a debate raging over the safety of the diet, in 2011 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared that hCG weight loss products are in fact fraudulent.
