Question: When or why do you need an insurance umbrella?

Answer: Over the years I?ve heard some people say that they think umbrella policies are only for the wealthy. This is not necessarily true. We encourage many of our customers to consider protect their assets better by having an Excess Personal Liability Policy which is known as an ?Umbrella?. Anyone can have an auto accident or some other liability occurrence which may exceed their auto or home liability coverage thus putting their assets at risk. For just a few hundred dollars a year, you can buy $1 Million or more of additional protection thus giving you much greater financial peace of mind.

Question: What is an umbrella policy?

Answer: An umbrella policy is actually an Excess Liability policy. We will be talking about the Personal Umbrella Liability Policy in this article. The term ?Umbrella? is used as it describes the function of this policy: it provides an extra amount of liability coverage that goes OVER your primary automobile liability insurance, homeowners liability insurance, and some other ?exposures? you may have such as for a boat.

Question: What does it cost?

Answer: The premium is based upon how?many properties and vehicles you own and the limit of liability you select. The limits come in $1 Million increments. A typical $1 million dollar umbrella policy for a family that owns two cars and a home can cost between $200 to $300 a year. The premium is based upon the number of cars you own as well as the number of properties (and any other exposures such as boats). Higher limits will obviously cost more with each additional million dollars of coverage you select. Most of our Umbrella clients have $1 or $2 Million Umbrellas but we do have some who need as high as $20 Million limits in order to properly protect their assets.

Question: Why get one?

Answer: As mentioned above, the?purpose of an umbrella is to provide you with extra liability protection in case you are sued ?successfully?. You could be sued for your negligence resulting in injuring someone (i.e. being at fault) in an auto accident or if?someone should slip and fall at your home or be injured on your property due to your negligence. An Umbrella Policy provides you with at least a million dollars of additional protection over your primary policies. Also, don?t forget that you also will have the legal defense for covered suits provided by your insurance carrier on your primary auto or home insurance policies. With higher limits of protection our clients are better able to sleep at night knowing their assets are well protected. We encourage you to consider an Umbrella as part of your insurance program.

Data Stretching Back to 1959 May Explain Link Between Environment and Breast Cancer

When Ida Washington received a letter inviting her to participate in a women?s health study to explore the environmental roots of breast cancer, she didn?t think twice. Her mother was diagnosed with the disease nearly 40 years ago, and since then, it has been a terrifying mystery she has yearned to unravel.

Washington was just a teenager when the lump was found on her mother?s left breast. In the years that followed, as her mother?s cancer went into remission, she began to wonder what caused it. ?My mother didn?t smoke, she didn?t drink. Breast cancer didn?t run in the family,? she said.

Ida?s mother, Willie Mae Washington, now 92, participated in the first generation of a scientific study that has endured for more than half a century to investigate whether environmental exposures may trigger breast cancer. Now Ida Washington, 52, is continuing the legacy as part of its second generation.

The two women are among the more than 15,000 mothers, daughters and granddaughters in the San Francisco Bay Area enrolled in a project known as the Child Health and Development Studies, launched in 1959. Tens of thousands of samples of the women?s blood are stored, providing more than 50 years of continuous data on health outcomes and environmental exposures.

Scientists tap into this unique trove as they struggle to figure out what role environmental exposures play in the development of diseases such as breast cancer.

?These women are a national treasure,? said Barbara Cohn, director of the Child Health and Development Studies and Three Generations follow-up study, based in Berkeley, Calif. ?They hold the key to understanding the risks.?

While billions of research dollars have been spent on screening, treating and trying to cure breast cancer, still relatively little is known about its causes. One in every eight women today will contract the disease during her lifetime. Genes account for only a small number of cases, 5 to 10 percent. Known risk factors include age, obesity and low physical activity.

Washington, her mother, and other members of the Bay Area study are uniquely poised to help researchers answer the why?s of breast cancer and other diseases afflicting women.

Over the years, this group of women and their children???known in scientific jargon as a cohort???has helped scientists understand how diseases can start even before birth and may pass from one generation to the next???not just through genes, but also by things in their environment.

Funded largely by the National Institutes of Health, hundreds of scientific studies have been published about these women since the 1960s.

One of the more groundbreaking findings provided a clue that smoking during pregnancy could harm the fetus. Also, based on these women, scientists discovered that exposure to the now-banned pesticide DDT during a mother?s pregnancy could decrease a daughter?s ability to become pregnant and increase a son?s risk of testicular cancer. New findings are expected to be published soon.

There are no research cohorts like it in the country. In fact, it may be the only one of its kind in the entire world.

The study group is ?extremely valuable, almost unique,? said Shanna Swan, an environmental health scientist at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York who is not involved with the California research.

Census body: Egypt population reaching 92 million

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's government says in March, the number of Egyptian citizens will reach 92 million.

Of those, 84 million live in Egypt and 8 million abroad.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, the government's census authority, said the country's population has increased by one million since August 2012.

Egypt is the most populous country in the Middle East. A 2006 census put the population at 76.6 million, a 25 percent increase in a decade.

CAPMAS says Cairo, the capital, is home to 7.1 percent of the country's population, making it the largest and most densely populated city. The population of greater Cairo is estimated at 18 million.

The agency said the majority of Egypt's population resides along the Nile river valley, in just 7.7 percent of the country's territory.

Argentina heads to U.S. appeals court in bond fight

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Argentina will seek on Wednesday to persuade a U.S. appeals court to reverse an order that it pay $1.3 billion to a group of dissident bondholders stemming from the country's 2001 default, a showdown that could have wide impact on global debt markets.

The arguments at the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York are being closely watched amid fears of a new Argentina debt crisis if the country must pay the so-called "holdout" investors.

For years, the holdouts have demanded full payment after spurning two debt exchanges. Led by Elliott Management affiliate NML Capital Ltd and Aurelius Capital Management, they say they are simply attempting to hold Argentina to its obligations and that the country has plenty of reserves to pay them.

Argentina, though, calls these investors vultures and has vowed not to pay them. A victory by the holdouts, Argentina argues, would harm investors who agreed to the debt restructurings as well as banks that handle its payments. The country also says such a ruling could make future debt crises "unresolvable" and spur further investor litigation.

A decision against Argentina would deal a major blow to President Cristina Fernandez. As a sign of the importance of the court hearing, Argentina's Economy Minister Hernan Lorenzino is planning to attend the hearing, his spokeswoman said Tuesday.

A three-judge panel is set to hear arguments from lawyers for Argentina and for the holdouts, as well as several other parties.

Argentina defaulted 12 years ago on about $100 billion in sovereign debt. About 92 percent of its bonds were restructured in 2005 and 2010, giving holders 25 cents to 29 cents on the dollar.

If ordered to pay the small group of holdout creditors, there are fears that Argentina could default again on $24 billion in previously restructured debt.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Griesa in New York ruled in February 2011 that Argentina violated a key provision of its bond contracts. That provision required the country to treat all of its creditors equally by paying the holdouts if it also paid investors who had agreed to the two debt swap deals, the judge found.

In October, the 2nd Circuit largely upheld that ruling. It is now reviewing Griesa's plan for how the payments would work. Griesa has said the next time Argentina made an interest payment to the exchange bondholders, it would have to pay $1.33 billion owed to the holdouts into a court escrow account.

The appeals court is also examining treatment of Bank of New York Mellon , which acts as trustee to the exchange bondholders, and the impact from the ruling's injunction on other third parties.

In their appeal, Argentina's lawyers have contended U.S. courts do not have the authority to order a sovereign government to turn over assets to bondholders.

But Henry Weisburg, a lawyer at Shearman & Sterling who has followed the case, said Argentina made similar arguments during its last hearing before the appeals court. And he also noted the appeal will be heard by the same panel that issued the October ruling backing Griesa.

"You have to wonder what traction they'll have the second time around," he said of Argentina.

In court papers, lawyers for Argentina have said the country would be willing to reopen its restructuring offer. Such a move, though, would require legislative permission and likely be rejected by the holdouts.

Argentina is separately awaiting a decision on whether the court will grant a rehearing of the October decision that required equal treatment of the holdout investors.

The U.S. government has backed that appeal, saying if the ruling is upheld, it could undermine the ability of other governments to negotiate future debt restructurings.

The appeals court's ultimate decision after Wednesday's hearing could be the final word on the matter. Although the court could end up rehearing the case or the Supreme Court could ultimately take up the case, such reviews are rare.

The case is NML Capital Ltd et al v. Argentina, 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 12-105.

Jillian Michaels puts one 'Loser' in a coffin

"I don't want to die" -- it's a fairly universal sentiment, but on Monday night's "Biggest Loser," it was more of a desperate plea.

Things got scary on the ranch as the six remaining contestants were each challenged to face their biggest fears. For some, that meant learning to live without their trainers and teammates. For others, it meant swimming in the open ocean or singing before an audience. But for one "Loser," facing her fear meant facing her mortality.

Gina's had a rough run of things in recent weeks. First she got into a heated blow-up with trainer Bob Harper, and later found herself at odds with Dolvett Quince and Jillian Michaels too -- not to mention several of her fellow competitors. But none of that compared to what Jillian had in store for her this week.

After Gina confessed to a fear of closed spaces, the claustrophobe was introduced to the creepiest of cramped quarters -- a coffin.

"Do you know why I chose this for you? Because you're killing yourself," Jillian told her bluntly, referring to both Gina's weight and her attitude. ?

If Gina had any doubts about that before she climbed into the coffin, she didn't afterwards.

"I don't want to die; I don't want to die," she repeated.

But after a few moments, Gina changed her thinking. Rather than focusing on her unpleasant circumstances, she thought about her bigger problems and how to fix them.

"At the core of all of this insecurity and crap, I'm such a good person," she cried, as Jillian looked on and cheered from outside the box. "And I deserve to be happy."

Once Jillian was satisfied that Gina had the right idea -- about 20 long minutes later by Gina's estimation -- she opened the lid and released her.

OK, sure, anyone would say just about anything to get out of a premature coffin, but Gina actually seemed to change her ways from that moment on -- at least until the end of the episode.

When one challenge required contestants to hold on to 40 percent of their body weight, Gina held out the longest and won immunity for the weigh-in. And when she realized her recent, pre-coffin behavior wasn't warranted, she apologized to one of her fellow players.

"That wasn't me," she told Alex, later adding, "I have a few more apologies to make in the house."

Well, it's a good thing she started her mea culpa tour with Alex. If she'd waited, she wouldn't have had the chance to say anything to her at all.

At the weigh-in, everyone dropped big numbers -- even this season's biggest loser so far, Gina, who didn't need a loss at all this week. But some numbers just weren't big enough, like Alex's 8 pounds. Alex found herself in the bottom two against Jackson, who dropped 12, and the votes didn't go her way.

Gates, Zuckerberg, Other Tech Icons Promote Youth Coding in New ...

A new nonprofit seeking to rally interest among children, parents and schools in computer programming is getting help from some big guns in the tech industry, including the founders of Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter.

Microsoft?s Bill Gates, Facebook?s Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey of Twitter and Square are among the tech icons appearing in a short movie being released Tuesday by Code.org, the new nonprofit that wants to make programming classes more widely available in schools.

The organization, founded by Hadi Partovi, a tech entrepreneur and startup adviser and investor, is part of an intensifying effort among technology companies to address a serious shortfall in programming talent. Few schools offer programming classes. Code.org is encouraging people to sign a petition on its Web site stating that every student should have an opportunity to learn to code, and to use that response to advocate for greater availability of computer science classes in schools.

Many of the luminaries in the movie describe their first crude programming efforts and attempt to demystify the discipline by comparing it to other interests that students more commonly pursue. ?It?s really not unlike playing an instrument or playing a sport,? Drew Houston, the chief executive and cofounder of Dropbox, says in the movie. ?It starts out being very intimidating but you kind of get the hang of it over time.?

Mr. Partovi went outside nerd circles to add cachet to programming. The movie features the professional basketball player Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat, who took programming classes as a student, and Will.i.am, the music producer and Black Eyed Peas frontman. ?Here we are, 2013, we all depend on technology to communicate, to bank, and none of us know how to read and write code,? Will.i.am says in the film. ?It?s important for these kids, right now, starting at 8 years old, to read and write code.?

Code.org also secured endorsements for youth programming from a much broader group of celebrities from politics, business and education, including Bill Clinton, Eric Schmidt of Google, Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers and the theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking.

Mr. Partovi said Microsoft has provided financial support to show the film in Regal movie theaters as an advertisement for a week starting this Friday. Mr. Zuckerberg will promote it to his Facebook followers and Google will feature it on YouTube, Mr. Partovi said.

ASUS PadFone Infinity announced: 5-inch, 1080p screen, Snapdragon 600 CPU and full HD tablet display (hands-on)

You may have heard a new PadFone was on the way -- it's not like ASUS has been dropping obvious hints or anything. In any case, surprise! ASUS just unveiled a new model, the PadFone Infinity. Like other PadFones, this is a handset that slips into a tablet-like dock, allowing you to make use of a bigger screen. This time, though, it ships with Android 4.2, and the display has grown from 4.7 inches to 5. The resolution is now 1080p (up from 720p), which comes out to 441 pixels per inch. Additionally, the tablet's 10.1-inch screen has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200, up from 1,280 x 800 in the last-gen model. It's plenty bright, too, at 400 nits, but that's a slight step down from the last-gen model, which lit up to 500 nits.

What's more, the phone's gotten an upgrade on the inside: it now packs a quad-core, 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 chip with an Adreno 320 GPU, some of the freshest components Qualcomm has to offer at the moment. Also on-board, you get 2GB of RAM to help boost performance, with your choice of either 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage. As far as connectivity, you're looking at EDGE, GPRS, GSM, WCDMA, LTE and DC-HSPA+, along with all the usual radios: WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, A-GPS and even GLONASS. According to an ASUS rep, the device uses a nano-SIM rather than micro-SIM. Around back, ASUS has added a 13-megapixel autofocusing camera with an LED flash, five-element, f/2.0 lens and burst shooting at eight fps. There's a front camera too, capped at 2MP, in case you want to do the occasional video chat. Meanwhile, the 2,400mAh battery promises up to 19 hours of 3G talk time, and up to 40 with the dock attached.

Like every other PadFone that's been released, this won't be available in the US, but the phone-and-dock combo will cost £799 / €999 when it goes on sale in Europe this April. The phone is also headed to Asia, though we don't have any more details. You'll also have your choice of colors, we hear: gray, gold and hot pink, if that's what you're into. A visit from pitching coach Dave Righetti helped to calm down Brett Bochy, who was the closer at Double-A Richmond last year and uses movement and deception to miss bats. He got a strikeout and a ground ball to end the inning and preserve the tie.

?That?s a tough spot, but you?ve got to be ready for that when you pitch late in games,? Brett Bochy said. ?I?m nervous every time out and there?s definitely more the first time.?

Neither father nor son did anything out of the ordinary when the elder Bochy walked to the mound and handed over the baseball. The manager said the previous pitcher, Fabio Castillo, had reached his pitch limit and Brett was the next name on the list.

?Being the first time, I noticed him,? Brett said. ?But once I toed the rubber it?s like any other game.?

The pitching wasn?t very good after Sergio Romo threw his inning, as Chris Heston gave up two runs before Castillo began to melt down. All the positives came much earlier in the game on the offensive side.

Andres Torres, playing his first game in a Giants uniform since 2011, lined an RBI single to left field and alertly took second base on the throw home. Torres came out after two at-bats because he?s had a bit of oblique soreness and just began taking swings again from the left side in batting practice earlier Monday. He batted right-handed twice in the game before the White Sox switched to a right-handed pitcher.

Bruce Bochy said Torres should be fine with a bit more rest.

Hector Sanchez (sore shoulder) threw to bases with no issues Monday and is likely to begin catching in games in another two to three days, Bruce Bochy said.

Obama to meet leading Republicans McCain, Graham on Tuesday

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will meet leading Senate Republicans John McCain and Lindsey Graham on Tuesday to discuss immigration reform efforts and could also delve into across-the-board spending cuts set to take effect on Friday.

Obama's meeting with the two U.S. senators, part of a bipartisan "Gang of Eight" working to craft immigration legislation, was described by a White House official on Monday as focused on that issue.

But a McCain aide said the White House encounter likely would go beyond immigration and could include the looming $85 billion in government spending reductions that will hit domestic programs and the Pentagon unless a last-minute deal is reached.

The White House escalated a campaign on Monday to convince Americans dire consequences await if the so-called "sequester" cuts go ahead on March 1, warning of a slowdown in global trade, a stalled fight against cancer and compromised border security.

But there was no word that Obama was ready to start negotiations. Graham is a member of Senate committees on appropriations and the federal budget. He and McCain both sit on the armed services panel. The McCain aide said the U.S. troop drawdown from Afghanistan could also be discussed on Tuesday.

The planned meeting marks Obama's latest outreach to some of the Republicans involved in negotiating an overhaul of the U.S. immigration system.

Facing criticism for not getting more involved in the delicate process on Capitol Hill, Obama phoned McCain, Graham and Senator Marco Rubio last week. It was not immediately known why Rubio, a rising Cuban-American star in his party and considered crucial to winning conservative backing for any reform deal, was not scheduled to participate on Tuesday.

Obama backs the Senate reform effort but he and the Republicans differ over some key details.

Obama emphasized in his recent State of the Union address the importance of creating a clear path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million immigrants in the United States illegally.

Many Republicans stress that there must first be measurable progress in securing U.S. borders, a condition hard for the president to accept if it drags out the legalization process.

The White House, however, is counting on Republicans feeling pressure to move swiftly on immigration reform after they were chastened by Latino voters' rejection in the November election.

In just three weeks, glitz, glam and a whole lot of spray tan return to prime time as "Dancing With the Stars" kicks off its 16th season. The battle for the mirror-ball trophy will see 11 stars -- or reasonable facsimiles -- face off for ballroom bragging rights. But which 11 stars?

Report Cites China in US Hacking

A Virginia-based cyber security firm has released a new report alleging a specific Chinese military unit is likely behind one of the largest cyber espionage and attack campaigns aimed at American infrastructure and corporations.

In the report, released today by Mandiant, China's Unit 61398 is blamed for stealing "hundreds of terabytes of data from at least 141 organizations" since 2006, including 115 targets in the U.S. Twenty different industrial sectors were targeted in the attacks, Mandiant said, from energy and aerospace to transportation and financial institutions.

Mandiant believes it has tracked Unit 61398 to a 12-story office building in Shanghai that could employ hundreds of workers.

"Once [Unit 61398] has established access [to a target network], they periodically revisit the victim's network over several months or years and steal broad categories of intellectual property, including technology blueprints, proprietary manufacturing processes, test results, business plans, pricing documents, partnership agreements, and emails and contact lists from victim organizations' leadership," the report says.

The New York Times, which first reported on the Mandiant paper Monday, said digital forensic evidence presented by Mandiant pointing to the 12-story Shangai building as the likely source of the attacks has been confirmed by American intelligence officials. Mandiant was the firm that The Times said helped them investigate and eventually repel cyber attacks on their own systems in China last month.

Chinese Allegedly Tied to Cyber Attacks on US Watch Video China's Alleged Hacking Scandal Will Not Push Companies to Leave Watch Video

The Chinese government has repeatedly denied involvement in cyber intrusions and Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said today that the claims in the Mandiant report were unsupported, according to a report by The Associated Press.

"To make groundless accusations based on some rough material is neither responsible nor professional," he reportedly said.

Mandiant's report was released a week after President Obama said in his State of the Union address that America must "face the rapidly growing threat from cyber attack."

"We know hackers steal people's identities and infiltrate private e-mail. We know foreign countries and companies swipe our corporate secrets. Now our enemies are also seeking the ability to sabotage our power grid, our financial institutions, and our air traffic control systems. We cannot look back years from now and wonder why we did nothing in the face of real threats to our security and our economy," he said.

Though Obama did not reference China or any country specifically, U.S. officials have previously accused the Asian nation of undertaking a widespread cyber espionage campaign.

Referring to alleged Chinese hacking in October 2011, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said in an open committee meeting that he did not believe "that there is a precedent in history for such a massive and sustained intelligence effort by a government agency to blatantly steal commercial data and intellectual property."

Rogers said that cyber intrusions into American and other Western corporations by hackers working on behalf of Beijing -- allegedly including attacks on corporate giants like Google and Lockheed Martin -- amounted to "brazen and widespread theft."

"The Chinese have proven very, very good at hacking their way into very large American companies that spend a lot of money trying to protect themselves," cyber security expert and ABC News consultant Richard Clarke said in an interview last week.

High school football: Chagrin Falls duo headed to Johns Hopkins

Jack Campbell and Bradley Munday helped lead the Chagrin Falls football team to unprecedented heights during their three years of varsity play.

They will continue their collegiate football careers after committing to play at John Hopkins University in Baltimore.

A three-year, two-way starter at running back and linebacker, Campbell accumulated more than 3,000 yards rushing, scored 32 touchdowns and surpassed 300 tackles during his career at Chagrin Falls.

A three-year, two-way starter at running back and cornerback, Munday eclipsed the 3,500-yard mark in career offense and scored 27 touchdowns.

Both players sport high marks in the classroom, too, with Campbell having a 4.371 GPA and Munday having a 4.239 GPA.

In other college announcements, Joe Iafelice, a linebacker from Mentor, will play football at Otterbein. Reese Armstrong, a defensive back from Mentor, will play football at John Carroll.

Do Google ads discriminate based on race?

A professor at Harvard University believes she?s uncovered evidence that race is sometimes used to determine which ads you see when you go online.

Based on thousands of searches, Latanya Sweeney, who runs the university?s Data Privacy Lab, concludes in a recent paper that there is ?discrimination? based on race in the delivery of certain ads.

She found that Google searches using names that sounded black (Latanya) turned up strikingly different ads than when the search was done for a name that?s more typically considered white (Adam).

?Right now, we don?t know why it happens or whose fault it is,? she said.

This all started when Sweeney?s colleague, Adam Tanner, went online to search for a previous paper she had written. Alongside the search results was an ad for instantcheckmate.com. It said, ?Latanya Sweeney. Arrested??

Sweeney had never been arrested and wondered what was going on. So they did a search using Tanner?s name and this time the ad said, ?Looking for Adam Tanner?

?After a few hours of searching with different names, Tanner said he had figured it out. ?Black-sounding names? got the ?arrested? version of the Instant Checkmate ad, while names that sounded white got a more neutral ?looking for? version.

Sweeney, a computer scientist, was skeptical and decided to show that this was not happening. In September and October of last year, she conducted 2,184 searches (on Google and using the search field on Reuters.com) using racially associated names, such as DeShawn, Darnell, Jermaine, Geoffrey, Jill and Emma.

The searches took place using different browsers at different times of day, different days of the week, with different IP and machine addresses, operating in different parts of the country. Sweeney focused on the ads generated for instantcheckmate.com. They appeared more than any other public records search company and they were the only ads to include the word arrest.

The results, published on Harvard?s Data Privacy Lab website, found that ?black-sounding names? were significantly more likely to produce ads that suggested an ?arrest? might have taken place regardless of whether the company had an arrest record associated with the name.

• With searches for apparently black names on Reuters.com, when Instant Checkmate ads appeared, ?arrest? was in the text 60 percent of the time. When names that appeared to be white were searched, ?arrest? came up in only 48 percent of the ads.
  
• The names that resulted in the highest percentage of ads with ?arrest? in the text were Darnell (84 percent), Jermaine (81 percent) and DeShawn (86 percent). Those that had the most ads without the word ?arrest? were Jill (77 percent) and Emma (75 percent).
  
• The disparity was smaller, but still significant with searches on Google.com. The word arrest was used 92 percent of the time for black names and 80 percent for the white names.
  

?I was surprised,? Sweeney said. ?I really did not expect the pattern to hold and then to do so with that much statistical certainty shocked me.?

Reuters told NBC News it does not generate the ad results that appear on its website. The company said they are ?wholly determined? by Google?s AdSense program.

In a statement sent to NBC News, Google said:

"AdWords does not conduct any racial profiling. We also have a policy which states that we will not allow ads that advocate against an organization, person or group of people. It is up to individual advertisers to decide which keywords they want to choose to trigger their ads."

Instantcheckmate.com also insisted it?s advertising is not connected to race in any way:

?As a point of fact, Instant Checkmate would like to state unequivocally that it has never engaged in racial profiling in Google AdWords, and that we have absolutely no technology in place to even connect a name with a race. The very idea is contrary to our company's most deeply held principles and values.?

Why is this happening?
Sweeney suspects there are two main possibilities:

• Instant Checkmate did something, such as provide ads suggestive of arrest disproportionately to black-identifying names.

So what?s the harm in this?
We all know the Internet enables advertisers to deliver targeted ads based on your search history. It?s one thing to assume you?re a sports fan or just had a baby ? and even that creeps out some people. But what if the ads served up were based on race in some way?

Just imagine that someone is searching your name ? your boss, a potential employer, friend, someone you just started dating, a financial institution or potential landlord ? and they see an ad that intimates you might have a criminal record?
