'Offensive' travel insurance advertisement back on the air ...

?Offensive? travel insurance advertisement back on the air | International Travel Insurance Journal

ESSENTIAL READING FOR TRAVEL INSURANCE INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

A television advertisement that aired in Australia in 2011 is back on the air in a revised form, having been criticised by the public and come up against the Advertising Standards Bureau. The advert, which was for review and comparison website Compare Travel Insurance, initially included a scene where a half-naked obese man received a massage from a masseuse who looked somewhat displeased with her client. The Bureau judged that the scene was ?offensive and demeaning to the overweight?, although it recognised that the tone of the advertisement as a whole was light hearted and contained slapstick humour. The offending scene has been replaced now the advert is back on the air, but instead of a large man receiving a massage the traveller ? protagonist in the advert ? instead spills his yogurt on some bikini-clad rollerblading women. The premise of the advert is that customers can cut the big risks of their holiday into smaller risks by taking out travel insurance ? at the end of the advert, the obese man ? ?large risk? ? is turned into a small risk ? a dwarf.
