Ohio man drowns in Florida

DESTIN, Florida (WTVN) -- A Pickaway County man died while vacationing in Florida Thursday. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office says Daniel Akers, 62, of Stoutsville, was snorkeling with his son-in-law off the east jetty at the East Pass when he got caught in a current.

"The one family member did start to get a little bit tired and went to the shore to rest and he noticed that Mr. Akers was getting sucked out a bit by the current, it was pulling him out," said Sheriff's Office spokesperson Michelle Nicholson.

Several people tried to help Akers, but were unable to reach him. Finally a Coast Guard boat was able to pull Akers from the water and begin CPR. He was rushed to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Nicholson says the area is popular for snorkeling because there are usually a lot of fish in the area, but it can be dangerous too. In March a 22 year old man died and another death in the area was reported in May 2011.
