Twitter to discontinue TweetDeck for iPhone and Android, Facebook integration

(RNN) - Twittersphere beware: one of the social network's most popular utilities soon will be unavailable for some of the world's most popular mobile devices.

TweetDeck, an application that allows Twitter users to simultaneously view various feeds, will be discontinued for iPhone and Android.

Twitter, which bought TweetDeck in May 2011, will remove the apps from mobile marketplaces in May. The applications will stop functioning on all mobile devices shortly after.

In an announcement released on its blog, Twitter said it will also discontinue support for the utility's Facebook integration, but failed to give a specific date.

Twitter added that it also will cease support for its AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) TweetDeck product. AIR is a web development tool that allows companies to create non-platform-based desktop web applications.

The social media giant said it will focus on developing web-based versions of TweetDeck.

"Over the past 18 months, we've been focused on building a fast and feature-rich web application for modern browsers, and a (Google) Chrome App, which offers some unique features like notifications," Twitter added.

The company said it will continue to invest in its Twitter iPhone and Android application in the absence of TweetDeck.

"In many ways, doubling down on the TweetDeck web experience and discontinuing our app support is a reflection of where our TweetDeck power-users are going," Twitter said. "Over the past few years, we've seen a steady trend towards people using TweetDeck on their computers and Twitter on their mobile devices."

Twitter recently released a record number of updates to the web browser version of TweetDeck, which it credits to almost doubling the number of TweetDeck web developers over the past six months.

The company said it is still looking to expand its software engineering team.
